I still remember my mother's stories when I was in elementary school about the creatures living in the forest. Even though we couldn't see them, sometimes we could feel their presence.
During New Year's Eve, there was a unique event in our barangay that became part of our tradition. When I was a child, fireworks were not yet banned, so almost every house had their own fireworks. My brother and I were always excited to welcome the New Year, so we would often dress up early to attend mass.
In our place, there was a mass before the New Year, so we would always celebrate the New Year at the church and go home only after the mass. Our church was on a high place, so we called it "100 Steps" because you had to climb almost 100 steps to get there.
From the church, you could see the entire barangay, including the rice fields and the vast forests that were still full of life at that time. I remember that after the mass, the people in the barangay would start lighting fireworks. My mother told me to watch the fireworks coming from the forest.
I was surprised by what my mother said because I knew no one lived in the forest. Our barangay was small, so I knew everyone there. But I was amazed when I saw different colored rockets coming from the forest. They weren't as beautiful as the fireworks from the houses, but they flew very high and had colors like red, green, blue, orange, and yellow.
According to my mother, those rockets didn't make any sound, but we couldn't confirm this because of the noise around us. Nonetheless, those rockets were truly unusual; they were small but flew very high. My mother said that the forest spirits were also celebrating the New Year.
At first, I was filled with wonder and curiosity about what I saw. But as time went on, we got used to the unusual rockets during New Year's Eve, and it became normal in our village.
Once, I also witnessed the unusual rockets flying from a large mango tree beside our house. Even though I wasn't scared, the mystery of the spirits and their unique celebration of the New Year stayed with me.
