Player Selection

'Every game has its rules. That's just the way of things.' They mused.

The board was set, the levels chosen.

The rules were in place with easily understood mechanics.

All that was left to do was select the players. 'But who to choose?' They pondered, glancing over the city.

There were many options to pick from. So many souls to play with. But which ones?
They could put siblings together. Maybe parent and child. Lovers. Rivals. Enemies. It was ultimately up to the players if they were a team or against the other.

No one has beaten their game in centuries, which was a little depressing. They needed to think this through. The game only happened once a century after all.

And they were rather tired of losing players within the first level or two. It was always a short-lived awakening. So the players would have to be souls with the ability to survive and think on their feet. Ones used to doing so on a near daily basis.

They whipped their heads around when two souls in particular caught their eyes... They were both bright. Even with the shimmering gray around them. Would they work? They might kill each other first. Or they could end up working together. It would be a gamble.

Hm... They couldn't ignore the simple fact though: The drama was fun to witness, no matter the players' decision.

How many betrayals had they seen? How many broken hearts? How many forlorn lovers? How many families have been torn apart? They mused.

'Well... It could be different this time. And they are oh so similar to the last winners... This could be fun... Yes. Their souls will do nicely.'

Now that the players were chosen, they just needed to be carefully prepared. They didn't want to end things too soon, because they had gotten too impatient.

They grinned when the chosen were ready. Even in their own homes, they weren't letting their guards down. Oh, yes. This would be great fun. He couldn't wait to see how far they would get.

Now, he just needed to drop them into the first level.
