Valerie:
I knew I had dozed off again. I hated night shifts, especially in an animal clinic. No one even comes in at... 11 PM. I kept looking at the clock, just waiting for time to go faster. I was about to doze off again when I heard someone ring the bell at the front desk. I walked out of the backroom and into the lobby. There was a very tall man (Well, tall compared to me, since everyone's taller than me), with messy dark brown hair. He looked really anxious.
He was carrying a cat in a carrier.
"Can I help you or your cat?" I asked, walking towards him. He nodded. "Yes, my cat, she seems sick. I don't know what's wrong." He said, his voice raised slightly. I could tell he was panicking, so he must really care about his pet. I mean, who wouldn't?
Okay, let me just lead you two back and I'll take a look at her and see what's going on."
He followed me back to the examination room, the cat in tow. I took the carrier from him and set it on the table, He sat down in one of the chairs in the room.
He was still almost taller than me sitting down, Jesus.
I opened the carrier lid to find a small white kitten who couldn't be much older than 4 months old. Of course a big, muscle-y dude has a kitten.
"What seems to be the problem?" I asked him, gently looking her over. She seemed fine.
"She was coughing a lot, I think it might be stomach problems or something." He said, his voice still filled with worry/ I looked in the kitten's mouth, again she seemed fine.
"It's probably just a hairball, she's fine."
"You sure? She was coughing up a storm." He said, his tone softening a bit. I was getting annoyed. "Yeah, it's a hairball. I know what I'm talking about." I said, not hiding my annoyance. I was too damn tired for this shit.
He smirked. "Calm down, Cocoa, don't ruffle your feathers. I've never had a pet before, I'm just worried."
Cocoa? Cocoa?! "Why did you call me that?" I said through gritted teeth. Jesus, I needed sleep.
"Your hair's the color of Cocoa, it just came to me. What's your name?" He asked.
"Dr. Valerie Grayson, yours?"
"Grant Mason, pleasure meeting you, Cocoa." He grinned, and I couldn't lie it made him more attractive. What the fuck am I thinking?!
I sighed. Now he was just doing it to get on my nerves.
"Pleasure... Anyways, you're free to go." I said, placing the kitten back in her carrier. He stood up and picked up the carrier. "Me and Princess thank you." He said, Princess chirped in agreement. "You're quite welcome," I said, mostly to Princess rather than him. He'd pissed me off enough.
"Thanks again for the help, Cocoa." He chuckled, before leaving. I clenched my fists and just nodded. I looked at the time. It was 12 AM. I could finally go home and get some much needed rest. I packed up my stuff and left the clinic.
Grant:
I loaded Princess up in my car, and asked my driver to take me home. One of the many luxuries of inheriting millions is you inherit a driver, yet I didn't really like it. I kinda wish my father had left the money to my little brother, Warren, instead. 50 million dollars was too much for me. And all I'd gotten with that money so far was a Ragdoll cat.
I'm not complaining though, Princess was a good investment. She keeps me company in the gigantic house I now live in. Even though I grew up in that house, I still get lost sometimes. I just wish I didn't live alone. I mean, Warren stops by sometimes, but it's just to get me to help him with his studies. But there was something about that girl. Valerie. Maybe it was her attitude I liked, that I could annoy her so easily. I don't know, but I just had to see her again. Her cocoa colored hair, those pretty eyes, her pale skin....My driver pulled into the driveway of my father's estate. Well, my estate. I got out and took Princess in the house and her out of her carrier.
I went outside and looked up the animal clinic and went to their website. It was starting to snow.
I found found Dr. Grayson's number and called her. I leaned against the front door and looked out at the snow covering the front lawn as I waited. It rang for a few seconds before she answered.
"Dr. Val Grayson, may I help you?"
"Hey Cocoa,"
I heard a sigh on her side of the call. "What do you want?" She huffed.
"Well, you're a vet, and I was wondering if you had any tips on how to raise a kitten." I said. There was a small pause before she spoke again. "You never did any research before getting her?" She asked, I could hear some shuffling in the background on her end.
"Nah, I'm a busy man and I'm lonely, just thought I'd get her for at least some company."
"What makes you so 'busy'?" She asked, annoyed.
"I'm a lawyer," There was another pause, this one longer. She didn't talk for a few minutes, but I could hear some movements. God, it's quiet here.
"Are you... Waylon Mason's son? The one who just inherited millions?" Her voice was a little unsteady, like she couldn't believe it.
"Yes indeedy, Cocoa. I'm the real deal. Want an autograph?" I chuckled, and she groaned a little.
"No. Ugh, what do you wanna know?..." I heard footsteps like she was pacing. Why could I hear that? Is she that mad?
"Um... You know what I just wanted to annoy you again. But if you ever need a lawyer, you have my number now!" I laughed, and she hung up. I smiled to myself and walked inside.
