Grant:
I was sitting in the sun room, reading, Princess in my lap, when my phone rang. I didn't wanna disturb the sleeping kitty in my lap, so I let it ring, but then they called again... and again.
I got annoyed with the ringing so I gently lifted her off my lap and got up to get my phone. I stopped dead in my tracks when I read the screen:
Incoming call from: Cocoa<3
Why was she calling me?! Did she wanna talk about something cat related? Mepissingherofftoomuchaboutrandomshit related? I got brave and answered.
"Hey, Cocoa! What's up?" Wait, was that too casual?! Oh screw it. If she's mad she'd mad.
I heard her sigh. Damn it, I messed up.
"Um, I called on business, Mr. Mason..." She said, her voice a little shaky.
"Woah, you don't have to be formal. Just call me Grant."
"Fine... Grant. Will you help me?" I heard her foot stomp. She must be on speaker.
"Well, what do you need help with?" I asked.
"I... Wanna hire you... for a case." She said hesitantly.
"A case? What's wrong?" I cut my attitude, I was a little concerned about her. What did she do? Punch someone? I mean, I can tell she has anger issues but I wouldn't think she's go as far as assault.
"Um, I'm being sued for... $10,000..." She said slowly.
"Wow. What the hell did you do?"
"I didn't do anything! Some lady at the clinic claimed I killed her dog on the operating table. Why would I do that? The dog had a tumor and was brought in too late! Please help me... I don't know what to do... I don't have that kinda money right now..." She let out a shaky breath.
I felt really bad. Among her yelling, it sounded like she was on the brink of tears.
"Okay, okay, calm down. It's gonna be okay..." I thought, I know I really shouldn't do this... but... "And, I'll lend you my services for free..." Nope, too late. Already said, can't take it back.
"O-Oh, no... I can pay you..."
"No. I insist." Shit.
"Oh my God. Thank you so much! You have no idea how grateful I am!"
It's not like I need money, I'm a millionaire now, but I know I'm never gonna hear the end of this from Warren. He helps keep track of my clients for me for practice, and he's not gonna be happy about me just giving her help for free.
I just hung up. Probably not the best move, but I don't deal with this anymore right now. I just texted her my address and told her we could talk about it in person.
Princess was rubbing on my ankle. She was so tiny. I mean, a 6'1 man compared to a kitten, she's gonna be small. I picked her up and put her on my shoulder.
"Why don't I go get you a treat?" I looked at her from where she was on my shoulder. She was purring and rubbing on the side of my face. I took that as a yes.
I walked over to the pantry, keeping a hand on her so she wouldn't fall. Her fur was still the silky soft kitten fur. I felt her rough, sandpaper like tongue on my ear.
I set her down on the ground and walked into the huge pantry. Shelves stacked with all sorts of snack foods. All the types of pasta you could ask for. I didn't think my dad even needed all this food. After he died, I got the house and everything in it, including his workers. I had one of the housekeepers go out and get me cat food and treats while I picked Princess up from a breeder.
I got the treats off the shelf that I'm guessing the maid cleared and made specifically for cat food. Any brand, flavor, and shape of cat food was there. Good God.
I got her some little heart shaped treats and put them on the floor in front of her. She gobbled them down like it was her first meal in centuries. I laughed to myself, watching her.
But then I remembered I never told Valerie when she could come over. I shrugged it off, she wouldn't come today anyway... Would she?
I walked back to the sun room, Princess close behind me, and sat back down. I picked up my book and started reading again. A Wrinkle In Time, my favorite book as a kid, it always made me feel a little again every time I read it.
I think it was about an hour later when I heard a knock on the door echo throughout the house.I was panicking inside. I didn't even expect her to come today and wasn't ready. I rushed to the front door, Princess wasn't following me this time and was asleep on the couch. Well, the one in the sun room. There were multiple couches in this damn house.
I opened the door. I didn't know if she had dressed casual or fancy. Maybe something in between. She was wearing jeans, winter boots, and a light blue sweater. Seeing how gorgeous she looked in something so simple but so well brought together made my cock satisfied. Shit.
I felt a little under dressed in my grey sweatpants and black t-shirt. It was only then I realized it was snowing.
"Oh, Valerie! I'm sorry, get inside." She rushed in away from the cold. Her sweater wasn't that thick, I could see her bra through it.
Jesus, get your head out of the gutter, Grant.
"You finally dropped that stupid nickname..." She huffed, wiping her wet boots on the doormat.
I grinned. She didn't care what I looked like right now, or that I was staring in places I shouldn't be.
"Now why would I do that, Cocoa?"
Valerie:
I hate this man so fucking much. I bit my lip in frustration.
"Yeah, why would you do that?" I said sarcastically, rolling my eyes. His house was huge, and I was only in the front room. It had to be the size of a small living room. I kicked off my shoes by the door so I wouldn't get snow everywhere in this perfect house. There was still snow coming down since the day it started. Monday, I think it was? if I remember correctly.
He led me through the house to his office. Looking around the place, I don't know what I was expecting to see or find out. It's a mansion, it's gonna be big... But I didn't think it'd be this big!
There were mostly just bookshelves with little nick-nacks, and pictures of the Mason family, with Grant and his brother as kids, on almost all the walls. Except... Non of the pictures had a mom in them, which was strange. I thought Mr. Mason was married.
Once we got there, he had me sit down in an armchair across from his desk. His office was very spacious and modern. A huge, floor to ceiling window on the left side of the room, and on the other side had a floor to ceiling, built in bookshelves lined with law books.
He looked so out of place in this room, in his casual clothes that looked like pajamas, and his messy hair which had yet to be combed. I think I might have gotten him out of bed when I knocked.
He sat back in the huge desk chair and seemed to be thinking before he looked over at me again.
"Okay, so what was the complaint that lady had about you again?" He asked, sounding tired, but not sleepy. Like he's asked this question so many times it was a routine for him now.
"She said I killed her dog on purpose and is suing me for 10k." I crossed my legs, looking at the floor. I was trying to hide my anger so I wouldn't start raging about the situation.
"So, you didn't kill the dog?" He asked, an eyebrow raised, and a small smirk on his face. I clenched my fists. Why was this man so infuriating?!
"The dog had a cancerous tumor in its stomach. He wasn't treated quick enough for it and died, of cancer, not from me." I said, trying to hide my frustration once again, although this time I don't think it was working.
"Okay, I'll work out the court date and stuff for you." I nodded, but then I heard a voice I didn't recognize.
"Am I interrupting something?" The stranger asked. I turned around in my seat to see who it was. He looked exactly like Grant, but shorter, and with green eyes instead of blue. He had his arms crossed and was leaning in the door frame.
"Just a client. Cocoa, say hi to my little brother, Warren." Grant stood up and walked over to stand beside Warren.
"Your name is... Cocoa? Peculiar name," He grinned, a mischievous one like his brother's. I stood up and walked over to the two of them. "My name's Valerie Grayson.. Nice to meet you," I held out my hand and he shook it.
"Likewise." He still had a grin on his face. His hand was soft, but cold. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw that Grant looked furious. I don't know why he was upset.
"Um, I should be going..." I said. I left the room and tried not to get lost. I retraced my steps from before.
I eventually found the front room again (after getting lost twice), and put on my boots. When I opened the door it was still snowing, and getting thicker. I shut the door and stayed in the front room, hoping the snow would stop soon.
