Ryan sighs, "So Jean you telling me that after I tell you that my house is haunted, you just went ahead and opened the door for satan's kids?"
"I was under some hypnosis. The demons had gained control over my body," said Jean solemnly.
Jelani said, "Yeah it's not entirely his fault."
Ryan throws her purse on the couch, "And that's why my darn window and bathroom door are broken right?"
"Well yes. But I wouldn't have let all this happen if I didn't have to. This work is dangerous," says Jelani.
Jean sat beside Jelani on the couch "Your eyes are so much different now. I don't suppose I imagined you with magical, shining purple eyes. When you said you were somewhat of a medium what did you mean"?
Jelani played with her fingers, "Well I've had these unique abilities since I was a child. I still remember the day my mother found out, I was only 9."
*Flashback to 1964 to a project building in the southside of Chicago*
Jelani awoke from her slumber on the small whiney bed she shared with her younger brother. A cold sweat stains her dusty nightgown. She felt a humming in her ears and a fire inside her body that got her frantic. Something was pulling her to her mother's room. She quickly scampered to the room, with butterflies in her stomach swarming. 'But why?', she wondered.
She slowly opened the door to see her mother deep in slumber. The moonlight gleams on her mother's fuller belly, carrying that of her soon-to-be second-baby brother. She looked to the corner of the room, where a figure stood tall, shrouded in shadows. The smell of its' rotted flesh and snarling caused a shiver to overtake her spine. Red, beady eyes gleamed in the dark, menacingly looking back at her.
Jelani screamed in fright, which awakened her mother. Her mother looked to see the lanky, corpse-like figure of the beast. She stayed frozen in shock, like prey succumbing to a fierce predator. The dark entity's eyes turned towards her mother as it raised its talons to pounce.'No', Jelani thought to herself.
She felt a surge of energy ring in her cranium and radiate through her irises. Her hands warmed with electrifying power, and she raised her hand against the evil creature. The grim-fiend was weakened, wrapped in swarms of sapphire light as it evaporated into thin air.
Jelani's mother broke out into a sobbing fit as she looked at Jelani in shock. Jelani couldn't catch her breath. Black dots danced in the girl's vision, her body drumming down to earth as she hit the floor.
"My mom believed that I was sent here for a purpose. To help others like I did her. At 15, to try to find other people who had my powers, I started to seek work with exorcists, psychics, and mediums. I haven't been able to find anyone else, though. Anyway, they further introduced me to the work I pursue now," said Jelani.
Jean couldn't help but gaze into Jelani's eyes. He thought he figured her out, but each layer he peeled away gave him more questions. Ryan's hearty laughs made them both jump in their seats.
"Dang where are you against these damn pig ass honkies then," said Ryan.
"It doesn't work like that. My powers react to more spiritual phenomena."
Jean says "But why didn't you exorcise the children, why did you let them disappear too?"
"I did an exorcism job one time where I came into contact with demons like that. They first separate the mind from the child and attach themselves to their soul. Like a parasite, they suck away at their life force until their souls are banished to purgatory. At that point, they cannot be brought back and their bodies are used as vessels. The demon can then use them to spread to other people like a spiritual virus."
Ryan grimaces before she reveals the liquor in her hand, "how about a drink?"
Jean shakes his head, "Hey look I'm sorry for how I was earlier. And thank you for protecting me. Maybe we can work together if you're still up for it."
"I accept your apology, and of course," Jelani says softly with a bright smile on her face.
Jean smiles back infected by her warmness.
Ryan grinned, "See this is what I'm talking about. Love to see my brown people getting along. But I still have a question. Are the demons gone for good?"
Jean thinks to himself then says, "We can try the rest of the week to be sure that they are. Maybe you should stay with someone else to stay safe. And I'll make sure to call someone to board these windows for the time being-."
Jelani interrupts, "Right, and I'll pay for the windows."
"That's not necessary you guys are helping me more than you know. There's no need to extend your generosity I'll take care of my place you guys just focus on the main problem. For now, I think we should get some damn sleep," Ryan says.
They all nod their heads in agreement as they head off to the night.
Writer: Hey y'all chapter 3 is done!!!
What y'all think of Ryan letting our two faves off the hook for paying? Cause me personally, couldn't be me.
Also Jean and Jelani are starting to get cool. Are y'all feeling the new dynamic or what?
Any grammar mistakes I made. Let me know so I can improve!
