"So you're a medium?" Jean asked Jelani.
"Somewhat."
Jean sucks on his lips his eyebrows shooting into the edges of his brown wavy hair.
"What"?
"Well, how should I put this nicely? Most mediums I have met had more approachable temperaments."
"Oh, and what do you mean by that Jean?" she says condescendingly.
"It's Mr. Rivera."
"Oh no I had it right the first time Jean!"
"Okay, what is your deal woman?"
Her jaw clenches, "I may not have the recognition that you have, but seeing that we work in an industry that is not respected I thought you would know how it feels to be judged-".
"Where are you going with this-"
"And do not interrupt me when I'm talking."
Jean scowls, "I am a grown man so I will-"
A pounding on the front door ceases their conversation.
The meek voice of a child calls out, "Is somebody there? My little brother and I are lost we need help".
Jelani looks off in the distance as a strange feeling tingles up her spine.
"I guess I'll get it," Jean says awkwardly.
Jelani quickly grabs his arm pulling him away from the door and puts him behind her "No don't I've felt this dark energy before. I got a good feeling that those aren't children".
Jean scoffs, "Well what else could they be?"
All of a sudden, the children started sobbing. Although blocked by the door, the cries bellowed in Jean and Jelani's ears, echoing in their brains like a melodic, sad song. Jelani quickly recites an incantation of protection, but Jean, entranced, walks towards the door as tears fall from his eyes. His face painted a stone-cold expression.
"No"! Jelani exclaimed. She grabs his hands and drags him up the stairs to the bathroom. Keeping him locked in by placing a barrier spell on the bathroom door.
She then rushes to the living room and looks through the peephole of the front door.
No one was there.
Suddenly the front-room window smashes, decorating the floor. Acting quickly she draws out her obsidian necklace in front of her and continues to recite incantations against the demons.
Not seeing anything Jelani froze, waiting.
Her breath quickly picks up after hearing hissing and clicking noises coming from outside. Suddenly the conjoined-deformed limbs of the children stretched through the window ., their teeth came barring, sharpened to deathly fangs. She raises the crystals to weaken the ferocious demons.
They snarl at her before rushing up the steps toward the bathroom on a hunt for Jean, but growl at their own failed attempt to enter due to Jelani's spell.
Quickly they rush inhumanly fast to the woman with a fire in her voice as she banishes the demons. Banishing them from poisoning any more innocent lives. And banishing them from marking children and making them into vessels for possession.
Her eyes glowed in violet light as she in all her might raised her hand against them.
Finally crying out in defeat they disappeared forever.
"Jelani are you alright?!" a panicked Jean banging from upstairs sounds throughout the apartment.
Jelani, too weak to answer, crumbles to her knees, her strength thinning.
A loud crash of the bathroom door erupted, followed by Jean's footsteps as he ran downstairs. He comes to Jelani's aide on the floor. There he saw them, her eyes glowing with violet light like a fluorescent bulb. He leans forward and brings her head softly to his lap.
He ignored the sweat on her face as he patted her cheek. "Jelani, can you hear me?!"
"I'm just tired not deaf Jean."
He rolls his eyes as he picks her up "I'm going to put you on the couch so take it easy."
She dazedly looks up to the ceiling her eyes returning to their brown color.
"What the hell!", Jean hears Ryan scream outside.
He hurriedly opened the door to see Ryan, who looked ready to blow a fuse.
"What in the hell happened to you guys and what in the hell happened to my window."
Jean rubbed the side of his face nervously and said, "It's a lot so you might need a drink..."
They both looked at the rubble on her floor, "...or two".
