Alex: Age 5 – Henry: Age 6
Alex had always been a big baseball fan. He and his dad watched it all the time together, while his mom was busy with a case. Earlier that year, his family had even gone to a professional baseball game. It had been one of the greatest days of his life. His parents had bought him and his sister hotdogs, and as many bags of popcorn as they could eat. Alex could see why baseball was considered America's favorite pastime. Which is why he was so excited to be starting Tee-Ball.
Alex was about to start first grade in a few months, so over the summer, his parents thought that the Tee Ball team might be a good place for him to make friends. Sure, he knew that Tee Ball wasn't "real baseball" but if he was good enough at it, he might be able to play on a baseball team when he was a bit older.
"You nervous?" he looked up and saw his family taking their seats on the bleachers directly behind his dugout.
"N-no..." he lied.
His dad just smiled, "Don't worry mijo, you're going to do great."
"Your dad's right," his mom ruffled his hair through the chain link fence. "you're going to do so good no matter what happens. Just remember the most important thing, is to have fun."
"Thanks, mom."
"Alex, you're up buddy." His coach called.
"I gotta go!" he said with a grin, and grabbed his bat.
"Go Alex!" June cheered. "Break a leg!"
He was beaming as he ran up to the plate. This was his big moment! He was winding up to swing, planning to hit the ball as hard as he could. Right as he was about to let lose what he was hoping, would be the swing of the century, an excruciating pain shivered through his wrist. He screamed as he fell to the ground, clutching his hand to his chest.
The whole world had seemed to go white and fuzzy around him. He was crying so much, he wasn't sure what was happening.
"Baby, what's wrong?!" his mom was next to him in a moment.
"It's his hand." He heard his dad say.
"Let me see it, sweetheart." Alex continued sobbing as she pulled his hand away to look at it. "I think his wrist is broken."
"But he hadn't done anything yet," June commented.
His parents shared a look but didn't say anything, "Let's get you in the car buddy." His dad gently picked him up and carried him off the field. The crowd and other players clapped to show him their support. Alex didn't care though. He just wanted to know why his hand hurt so much.
After a very speedy car ride in which several traffic laws were violated, the family was huddled into a hospital room waiting for Alex to get a cast put on.
"I told you to break a leg, not your wrist, dummy." June teased.
"Uh huh..."
"How is it feeling sweetheart?" his mom gently ran a hand through his curls.
"It's ok..." the pain has lessened a bit after one of the nurses had given him some medicine, but it still hurt a lot. "What... what happened...?"
His parents glanced at each other again, seeming to come to a silent agreement.
"We had been hoping to wait until you kids were a bit older." His dad explained, pulling up a chair."
"Have you ever heard of soul mates?" their mom asked.
June thought for a moment, "I think our teacher said something about them last year."
"A soul mate is a person that the universe thinks that you are supposed to be with for the rest of your life. Like your mom and I."
"You and your soul mate, are supposed to fall in love."
"Like a boyfriend?" June asked.
"Yes." Ellen nodded. "A lot of times boyfriends and girlfriends will be soul mates, and sometimes they will go on to get married, like your father and I. Soul mates are tied together, and deep down, want to find each other."
"But... what does that have to do with my hand?"
His dad held his wife's hand for a moment, before pulling out a small pocket knife. "Soul mates are connected so deeply, that when one of you gets hurt, the other does too." He took the knife and gently poked his finger.
Alex watched as a small drop of blood formed on his thumb. However, what surprised him, was that whenever he looked over at his mom, she also had a small drop of blood on her finger.
"How did that happen?!" June yelled in surprise.
"Because we're soul mates." Their mom smiled fondly at her husband. "We love each other, so we share each other's pain."
"That's what happened to you, Alex." His dad informed. "Your soul mate got a broken wrist, so now you have one too."
"Woah..." Alex looked down at his wrist with newfound respect. "I hope she's ok..."
