The sun was setting, casting a warm orange glow over the small town. Kai walked through the streets, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. He wasn’t used to being around so many people. His senses were sharp, too sharp, picking up every heartbeat, every breath. The wolf inside him wanted to escape, but Kai pushed it down. He had to keep control.

He kept his head low as he passed by the market, not wanting to draw attention. But just as he rounded a corner, something unexpected happened. A woman, moving quickly, walked right into him.

“Oh!” she gasped, stumbling back a little. Her hands reached out, searching for balance.

Kai instinctively caught her arm, steadying her. “Sorry,” he muttered, his voice low.

She tilted her head slightly, her pale eyes unfocused. “No, it’s my fault,” she said softly. “I didn’t hear you coming.”

Kai glanced down at her, realizing she was blind. He felt a strange tug inside but quickly stepped back, releasing her arm.

The woman smiled, though she couldn’t see him. “Thanks for catching me,” she added, adjusting the bag on her shoulder.

Kai nodded, though she wouldn’t notice. “You okay?” he asked, his voice quieter than before.

She nodded. “Yeah, just fine. You… you’re new here, aren’t you?”

Kai stiffened, unsure how to respond. “Maybe,” he replied before stepping around her and walking away quickly, the encounter leaving him unsettled.

They didn’t exchange names, but Kai had a feeling this wouldn’t be the last time they crossed paths.
