I don't really know how to react to the fact that I'm marrying...even more so that I'm marrying my student. Guilt gnaws at me. Will I ever be able to see her as more than my student?
"Congratulations, man! But remember, she is my future wife's sister. You have to take care of her, or else I'll give you a punch!" Sarthak's comment breaks through my turmoil. A plain smile forms on my lips.
Take care of her? Is that what it will be like? Since she is seven years younger than me, I think this is how it will be...I'll be taking care of her.
A pang of disappointment strikes my chest. I always wanted a companion for myself, someone mature enough to understand me. But it looks like I'm left with her.
As everyone rejoices in the engagement, my gaze lands on Ms. Verma. Her head is held low, and it isn't rocket science to understand that she is crying. I'm sure our shared dread of this marriage is the only thing common between us.
A sigh escapes my mouth as I pull out my handkerchief and place it in front of her. She looks up at me, tears brimming in her eyes, but the anger on her face is unmistakable. She has turned red with rage, and her smudged mascara and eyeliner only highlight her distress.
"Wipe your tears," are the only words that come out of my mouth. I feel the intensity of her anger as she grabs the handkerchief, her fingers brushing slightly against mine.
"You are doing this on purpose, aren't you?" She asks out of the blue, her voice sharp and accusatory.
I stare at her, bewildered. What is she implying?
"What are you saying, Ms. Verma?" I respond, trying to mask my confusion.
She steps closer, lifting her face to look directly into my eyes. Her proximity makes the tension palpable, almost suffocating.
"You are taking your revenge on me, Professor Agastya Kapoor!" Her voice is rough but only audible to me.
I look around, astonished by her words.
"And revenge for what, Ms. Verma?" I have to ask. I want to know what is being cooked inside that space in her head, where normal people generally have their brains but she clearly doesn't.
She grabs my hand, throwing the handkerchief I had given her out of courtesy as if it were a dirty piece of clothing.
"Revenge for being vocal about how ridiculous you are at your job. I spoke up against you today in class, didn't I?" Her eyes blaze with a fury that matches her words.
What a psycho!
I wasn't just marrying a girl younger than me, but an entire giant baby!
"You are ridiculous, Ms. Verma! If I wanted revenge, I would've just failed you in the tests," I state, trying to keep my voice steady.
