"what does the tattoo mean?" i turned to see a man with blue hair and dark eyes staring at me.

"it's a barcode."

"yeah, but what does it mean?" he pushed, gesturing toward my hand.

i let a sigh escape my lips and i met his gaze. "every barcode is different. they're on food, on clothes, on toys. each one is unique and stands for something different. like people."

he didn't say anything else. he just kind of looked at me.

the side door of the building i was leaning against opened, and calum walked toward me quickly. i followed him to his car that was parked on the street just outside of the apartment complex.

before i got in, i glanced back at the alley. the man was gone.

i climbed into the passenger seat and calum pulled out a wad of cash. "here's your half." i took it and shoved it as far down into my hoodie pocket as possible.
