"i told you about people in that neighborhood." calum said, his arms folded as he glared out the apartment window.

"you tell me about everyone. there is never any place we go where you think i'm safe."

he didn't answer. i stood up and walked over to him. i folded my arms across my chest and hunched over slightly, mimicking his body language.

we watched the sunrise together silently for awhile before he caught on. he shoved me with his shoulder, cracking a smile. "stop it." he turned, and walked in the direction of the bedroom. "i'm going to get some sleep." he called back. "you should too."

i didn't leave the window right away. i always loved watching the sunrise when we came back from the runs.

soon, the sun became too blinding and i decided it was time to go to bed. i headed to the bedroom and opened the door as quietly as i could.

calum and i shared a room, not because of choice. it was the only thing we could afford right now. we lived in new york, and the rent was too damn high. as soon as we saved enough money for gas and food, we'd leave the city. maybe after that, we'd stop and settle somewhere for awhile. maybe we'd just leave the state.

i took the money out of my pocket and tossed my hoodie onto the floor. then, i opened the sock drawer and took out as many empty socks as i could find. sitting on the floor, i spent the rest of the day sorting money into them as best as i could.
