"Cozy Cat... go back to sleep..." Luna's voice was a soft whisper in my mind.
I couldn't go back to sleep; the thoughts kept circling around me like vultures waiting for their prey to fall. My mind buzzed with anxieties and doubts, each one more persistent than the last. I tossed and turned, trying to find a comfortable position, but nothing seemed to work. Just as I was about to give up on the idea of sleep entirely, my phone buzzed on the nightstand. The sudden noise startled me in the silence of the night.
I reached over and grabbed it, squinting at the bright screen in the dark room. The text was from Fatima. It was odd to hear from her at this hour, and I couldn't help but feel a flicker of curiosity mixed with concern.
"Hey, uh you awake? Sorry for texting you this late" -Fatima (A.K.A Crystal) 1:58 AM
I stared at the message for a moment, pondering the urgency in her words. It wasn't like her to text so late unless it was something important. I sighed and began typing a response, my fingers moving slowly over the keys.
"It's fine, I can't sleep anyways" - Cozy Cat 1:59 AM
As I hit send, I thought I heard a faint whisper in the room. It was a fleeting sound, almost imperceptible, but it sent a chill down my spine. I shook my head, convincing myself that it was just my imagination playing tricks on me. The night can do strange things to a person's mind.
My phone buzzed again almost immediately.
"Oh, uh are your parents home" -Fatima (A.K.A Crystal) 2:00 AM
I frowned at the question. My parents were never home, always working late or traveling for business. It was the norm, but it seemed odd for her to ask about them now. What could she possibly need at this hour that involved whether my parents were home or not?
"No, they aren't here, why you ask?" - Cozy Cat 2:01 AM
I waited for her response, a sense of unease settling over me. Why would she need to know about my parents' whereabouts at two in the morning? The seconds felt like hours as I stared at my phone, the screen dimming slightly as it awaited the next message.
The reply came quickly, and it was even more perplexing.
"Can you meet me at the park, your school park at 2:30 AM, also come alone" -Fatima (A.K.A Crystal) 2:02 AM
My eyes widened at the request. The school park? At this hour? What on earth could be so urgent that she needed to meet me in the middle of the night? Fatima lived a kilometre away from me, and the park was even farther. The whole situation screamed trouble, yet there was a part of me that couldn't ignore her request.
"What the hell," I muttered to myself. It was such an unusual request, but Fatima wasn't someone who would ask without a good reason. Despite my reservations, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of excitement at the thought of seeing her. It had been so long since we last met, and maybe this was her way of reaching out.
"Sure" - Cozy Cat 2:10 AM
I glanced at the clock. It was already 2:10 AM. If I wanted to make it to the park on time, I had to leave now. I quickly threw on a hoodie and a pair of jeans, my mind racing with thoughts of what could be so important. I grabbed my phone and wallet, slipping them into my pocket before heading to the front door.
The house was eerily quiet as I tiptoed down the stairs. My brother was sound asleep, his room dark and silent. He wouldn't notice if I left, and with my parents gone, there was no one to stop me. I slipped on my shoes and opened the door, the cool night air hitting my face as I stepped outside.
