7: Just Stay
"I shouldn't be here."
Not the words I want to hear after being so close with him only two moments before.
"... What?" I ask, hesitating as I try to process his words. He's leaving? I shake my head. "You can't go."
He looks at me sadly, not even trying to produce a smile for my satisfaction. Instead, he takes a small step back - closer to the door, farther from me. I take a step closer to him to close the distance, but he just shakes his head and places his hand lightly on my chest. "I need to."
"This is absurd," I murmur and this time he tries to smile for me. It doesn't help. "No."
"I have to..." he pauses, as if debating whether to tell me the truth.
"Why." It's not a question; it's a demand.
"I-" he tries, but chokes on his words. "You told me not to say."
"Then don't... Just stay." I've never been so vulnerable.
"I can't," he says, twisting away from me and turning to the now open door, disappearing from my life for what I thought was forever.
