1978, March 21st, 8:45 am, Verona, Italy. A case reopened after there were new leads. The case’s name was Case File: 0021 a jane doe found under a lawn deck in 1945. No one had identified the body, claiming it to give it a peaceful rest. Oddly enough, the body never decomposed, like she was waiting for her killer to be found. Regardless of whichever detective got the case, no one could find any leads. That is… until I did. I, Andrea Lorenzo, had found a lead. A lead from a similar case that happened in 1765. Police reports wrote down that the body was that of an unidentified female with the same lacerations, bruises, cuts, and strangulation marks all around her body and neck. The cases were too similar to miss. The one problem was… that the 1765 jane doe had been disposed of, finally cremating it to ashes and putting the body to rest. That was the only downside of the case, but the case was similar enough and could potentially be used as evidence in court.
Another problem was that there were no traces of another person doing this, it was either the person who had done it was experienced in doing something horrendous or someone who was willing to touch a dead body. I had earlier gone to the morgue to observe the body, when it was being dissected. There was no struggle from the body on the outside, no defensive wounds, but the inside had many small pieces of cloth fibers in her throat, meaning she was asphyxiated, suffocated, to put it simply. But that didn’t disclose the cause of death. There were many other things shoved into Jane Doe's stomach, like rocks, stones of sorts, and an estranged piece of paper that read: “Find me.” It was disturbing, and the morgue doctors were mortified at the message. They bagged it in an airtight bag, their hands covered in blood as they did. I had watched silently, the morbid scene opening in front of me as they had done more than just dissect the body. Once they removed the cover covering the body, the true horror of the crime was shown. The lower region of the body, around the… genitals were cut crudely, but the doctors ruled out there wasn’t any sexual abuse or vaginal tears at all, which was odd, especially if the killer wanted to hide everything.
I had been staring at my desk for hours, papers sprawled around and the evidence sitting in front of me. It disturbed me that a method just as inhumane as the one I saw, was still going around for over a hundred years. I had ruled out sacrificial rituals made by cults that would worship high beings, all of which didn’t do anything as crude as this. I even ruled out the fact that this must’ve been done by some kind of revenge. But it wouldn’t have made sense if the body was unidentified and was practically nameless. It frustrated me, the case was still cold whenever there was a new lead of some kind. This case was strange, it was like some kind of story written by horror novels.
I turned my head when the door opened. My assistant, Cassandra Alessro, had come in with new papers for me. I gave a gentle sigh, my nose scrunched in pain as I got an even worse headache. “Thank you, Cass.” I said, watching as she placed the papers onto my desk as I nodded subtly. She smiled softly and nodded. “Maybe you should rest?” She asked, clearly worried about my well-being. I shook my head. “I don’t think I’ll rest until I finish this case. “ I said, wishing that I didn’t have to work today. I didn’t want to admit it, but I hated my job sometimes. I’ve always been fascinated by forensic and detective work, but I never thought it would be this boring. It was unexpected. Cass tapped my shoulder. “You know Andy, you can take a break?” She said, I shook my head in response. “No… This case had a twin in 1765. Same conditions on the body, same way our Jane Doe died.” I said, a disappointed tone in my voice and I looked at Cass. Something in the pile of papers she was holding.. Seemed off. “What’s in that pile?” I asked, pointing at it. “Oh, well.. There are apparently a bunch of cases like this, all over the world! Some from America, Russia, and even India came in. Chief told me to give the contact numbers to you so that you can contact the other detectives that share the same case, ma’am.” Cass said, handing the contact papers. I looked at the paper, some names standing out, specifically: Connor O’Donald from America, Nathaniel Orlov from Russia, and Lakshmi Kaur-Agarwal from India. Some others stood out too, including Takade Satoshi from Japan, Flavia Riberio from England, and Muhammad Alvarez from Mexico. I hummed, nodding as I quickly got the phone. “Cass.. set a ticket for England.”
