•READER POV•

Toshiro, or  'Shuro' as Laois called him, wanted Kabru and I to corroborate his testimony of what happened in the dungeon. We went to speak with the Island Lord, where we ended up meeting the Canaries. After hearing Kabru out, the elves agreed to venture to the dungeon's 1st floor with us. Utilizing people's greed, the Canaries were able to evacuate the majority of the 1st floor. However, the large congregation of people attracted the Mad Mage, causing a horde of walking mushroom to flood the Catacombs. They were easy enough to deal with, but then a GIANT walking mushroom arrived.

I had never seen anything quite like it before. Mycelia spread from its feet and it released mind controlling spores. Mithrun managed to take care of it, by teleporting it to the 4th floor, but more came. The appearance of more giant walking mushrooms gave way to a battle between Mithrun and the Mad Mage. When we tried to make our move, Chimera Falin busted through the wall and  covered the mage's body. Mithrun was about to land a killing blow, but Kabru and I intervened by jumping onto the one-eyed elf. The two of us had a tight grip on Mithrun when the floor beneath us collapsed. Mithrun used his abilities to keep the three of us from getting majorly injured in the fall, but we were now stuck on the 6th floor.

It's been a few days since Kabru, Mithrun, and I fell through that hole. We've journeyed further into the dungeon and learned a lot about Mithrun's past. He told us about his time as a dungeon lord and about the demon that stole his desires, along with his ears and eye. Although he's a lot of work to take care of, I found myself growing fond of the pale elf.

I had just finished washing the changeling spores off myself, when Kabru entered the room. "Hey, Y/n. Do you think you could wash out Mithrun's hair while I prepare dinner?"

I laughed at his request, but was quick to nod my head in agreement. I approached the room Mithrun was in and gently opened the door. The warm air rushed out, momentarily taking my breath away. I kept my gaze down as I entered the steamy room. "Uhm Mithrun? I hope you don't mind but Kabru asked me to help with your hair." He said nothing in response, but I could hear the soft thud of him sitting. Taking it as a sign of confirmation, I slowly crept towards his shadow.

Mustering up all of my courage, I snapped my head up. I was met with his sturdy muscular back, that was littered in scars. Although it was a pleasurable sight, I think I preferred his usual build. With my towel wrapped tight around my figure, I picked up a small bowl of warm water and a spare rag. I moved Mithrun so that his head rested against my thighs. Trying not to think of our intimate position, I focused on brushing his hair out with my fingers.

His hair was fluffy, yet coarse. It was clear that he hadn't even made an attempt at washing the spores from his hair. I wet the rag and rung it out over his head, making sure the warm liquid reached the depths of his hair. Using the cloth, I gently scrubbed away at the mushroom that had appeared atop his head. A comfortable silence filled the room as I continued to wash his silver hair.

As my fingers raked through his wet locks, I noticed the intense gaze that lingered upon me. His black void-like eye traced over my face. Slowly, his eye shifted from the sweat that dripped down my brow bone, to the soft curve of my lips. His attention made me shiver, a light warm spreading across my cheeks. My mouth felt dry, yet I managed a whisper, "Is this alright?"

His eye flickered over my face once more, before closing. Just as before, he remained silent. I scanned his features for signs of displeasure, but he looked so peaceful, one might think he fell into an eternal slumber. I was brought out of my thoughts by Mithrun's movement. He slowly stood up, bowed his head, and left.

•MITHRUN POV•

I had finally returned back to my original form. Kabru had already gone to bed, leaving Y/n to tend to me. She tucked me into my bedroll before pulling something out of her pocket. "Here, drink this. I doubt it's as good as a foot rub, but it should help you sleep." Her voice was soft and sweet. An unfamiliar warmth flooded my senses.

She raised a small, colorful vial to my lips. Placing one hand under my neck, she tilted my head up gently so that I may drink her brew safely. It was fruity, somewhat sour, but not displeasurable. I wonder what she tastes like... Wait, what?

The room felt like it was spinning as confusion racked my mind. I don't understand. All of my desires, besides revenge, were eaten by that demon, yet when she's near I get this warm feeling in my chest. My heart starts racing, my palms start sweating, and my cheeks heat up. Is it possible that I've grown to care for her, a woman of an inferior race, who I've only known for a short while? Maybe I should have her walk into another Changeling circle and turn back into an elf...

Removing her hand from behind me, she stood as she prepared to leave. "That should have you feeling tired soon, so I should get going." No. Wait. I quickly shot my left hand up and wrapped my slender fingers around her wrist.

•READER POV•

My breath hitched as his cold fingers grabbed my wrist. I peaked my head over my shoulder, seeing if this might be a sleep-induced movement. His arms were long enough that he was able to make contact with me while remaining in his bedroll. His eye was focused in the space beside me, it was evident that he wasn't sure what he was doing. "Mithrun?"

Finally, his eye locked with mine. "Please. Don't go." Throughout our journey, Mithrun always had a harsh, stoic, confident look on his face. But in this moment he looked fragile, almost like a dog begging for its owners attention.

My mouth was agape, I had never expected to see the captain of the Canaries in such a state. Upon further inspection, there was a slight blush that decorated his face. "Okay." I gave him a slight smile and sat down on his bedroll next to him. I shifted my hand so that it rested in the palm that previously held my wrist. The warmth of my hand made a comfortable contrast to his icy pale one. I placed my free hand against his cheek. He initially flinched at the contact, but soon leaned into the embrace. As his eyes began to close, I whispered softly to him, "I'm not going anywhere."

Authors Note: I actually managed to write a piece that isn't multiple parts! I had initially written a much longer introduction, but I replaced it with a short summary since the word count was 1600+. However, lmk if you would like to see the original version!

Some of Mithrun's thoughts felt a bit out of character, but since this is my first time writing from another character's pov, I hope you all don't mind too much. This was heavily inspired by the cover image of this chapter. Also, there may or may not be some nods to Astarion from Baldur's Gate 3... Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed it! Stay safe!
