"elaine i hope you know that just because you did more than the usual today, you're still not going to that feast"
elaine had gone the extra mile and cleaned everything. and by everything she meant even the basement, and no one ever went down there.
"yes mother"
both of them rolled their eyes in annoyance, and started packing up the bakery.
silence seemed to be a normal between the too of them, considering they never had anything to talk about. they're lives were just simply, not interesting. they had a basic routine that was never broken.
wake up, go to the bakery, work hard, go home. and repeat.
it made elaine frustrated. she wanted a life filled with crazy adventure and friendship, and maybe just maybe, some romance.
now, to be fair elaine, being her 8 year old self, thought that love was just something bound to happen. she thought that every one had a partner, and everyone was definitely going to find that person.
she knew that her mother had found love, her father, but it ended with tragedy. her father had supposedly died while fighting for his kingdom. they had never found his body, and no one even seemed to care.
elaine didn't really care either to be fair. he hadn't been much of a father to her, considering he was always gone protecting the people of rowland. she was only 3 when he passed, and these five years weren't that hard for her.
her mother didn't seem to care either really. elaine had found her balling once behind the bakery, but she forced herself to not comfort her mother, as she would have been punished for being outside anyways. she knew that she must of been hurting but she didnt seem to show it when she was around.
"elaine, i know you want to go to that feast but you know that i just can't let you go right?" her mother didn't even look at her while she spoke.
"no mother i really dont"
elaine didn't mean to sound rude, she was just being honest. her mother had always taught her never to lie even if it was to spare ones feelings. the cold hard truth was much more kind than lying.
"elaine" her mother groaned, rubbing her face while at it, "theres just some things you don't get"
elaine didn't feel the need to respond, as she gripped harder onto the basket she was holding.
"when you get inside, go straight to your room"
elaine felt ashamed. she knew that she hadn't done anything, but still managed to make her mother mad.
setting the basket of bread and various amounts of fruit down on the dining table, she swiped an apple from the top, not wanting to go hungry again.
she easily slipped past her mother and headed to what you could call her room.
it consisted of a doorway (no door included), a bed and a dresser. nothing special, just somewhere she could lie her head down if needed.
taking a bite of the apple, she set it down on her dresser and grabbed her candle. sliding under her bed, she set the now lit candle a few feet away from her, cautious about getting burnt.
lying on her back, she slipped her fingers through the crack of her bed, where the "mattress" and the boards met. finding what she needed she slid back onto her stomach.
the book was dusty, as it always was because of her hiding place. elaine didn't really care considering all that mattered was the words inside.
rubbing a little bit of the dust off, she read the words in bold.
