Prologue

3rd POV
In February of 1987, Renee Higginbotham was sexually assaulted by Waylon Forge.

She'd just moved out of her parent's house and was starting her life as an adult. She got an apartment and started a job as a waitress while she worked on getting her degree in Seattle state.

She quickly befriended her co-worker, Cora Stone, and her boyfriend, Charlie Swan. Cora and Charlie were 2 years older than Renee who was 19. Charlie was a deputy in training alongside his best friend, Waylon Forge, who was 24.

There was an unspoken tension between Charlie, Cora, and Renee, one that made their friendship more deep, and intimate.

But sadly, Waylon picked up on that...

Waylon was always jealous of Charlie, so he thought that assaulting Renee would be good payback against him for all the times Charlie made him feel 'inferior'.

Renee didn't tell Cora or Charlie who assaulted her, just that it happened. Renee was too ashamed and unsure if they would believe her or not. Then, a couple weeks later, Renee discovered that she was pregnant.

Renee was horrified.

Renee grew up with strict, religious parents. She couldn't get an abortion and her parents would demand that she marry Waylon. Renee cried to Cora and Charlie, a scared and confused teen who was still too young for the world's cruelty.

That was when Charlie made a decision... He would marry her in Waylon's place.

Renee and Charlie got married and Charlie became the father of the twin daughters that Renee gave birth to; Isabella Marie and Carissa Reine Swan.

Charlie and Cora both help Renee raise her daughters for three years. They co-parented well and they made a happy life together, but that didn't stop Renee's insecurity.

They had helped her with so much; Covering up what happened so her parents never found out, marrying her so her children wouldn't be labeled as 'bastards' and her a 'whore', helping her raise her daughters, getting her through her PTSD and postpartum depression....

The worst part of it all was that, Charlie and Cora had been dating before she came into the picture and ruined everything...

Renee felt guilty, so she decided that the best option was for her to leave. She divorced Charlie and left back home to California to live with her mother.

She never knew that she broke both Charlie and Cora's hearts by doing so, she just wanted them to be happy, and they were happy.... With Renee.

14 years later, Renee met Phil Dwyer.

Renee thought that she could have a second chance at love, and started a whirlwind romance with him. They got married after only knowing each other for two months and started a life together.

After their honeymoon, Renee decided to cook a homemade meal for everyone. Cara volunteered to go and help while Bella stayed in her room. Phil offered to stay home in case clumsy Bella had an 'accident'.

The trip to the store didn't take long as Cara knew where everything was in the store, and they returned home about half an hour early.

They went looking for their missing family members to announce their presence, as their calls had been ignored, but they found the shocking sight of Bella and Phil having sex.

Renee immediately called the cops as Bella was a minor (despite the fact that Bella insisted that A. They were close enough in age, and B. She consented to it) and Renee divorced Phil.

Seeing that her mother needed some time to herself, Cara arranged for her and Bella to move in with their father for the remainder of the school year.

And that, is where our story begins.
