Maggie sighed as she stared out at the crystal blue waves crashing against the pristine white sand.
She should be enjoying this vacation - the sun was shining, the weather was perfect, and she was staying at a beautiful beachfront resort.
But instead, her mind kept drifting to Joshua. Maggie had intentionally been ignoring him since arriving a few days ago, not answering his calls or responding to his texts.
It wasn't because she was angry at him or didn't want to talk to him. No, the real reason was far more complicated.
The truth was, that Maggie was starting to realize she had developed deeper feelings for Joshua than she had ever anticipated.
What had begun as a casual sexual relationship and budding friendship had slowly morphed into something more meaningful.
Maggie found herself thinking about Joshua constantly, looking forward to their conversations, and craving his company.
But she wasn't ready to confront those feelings - at least, not yet. Part of her was terrified to take that next step and admit she had fallen for him.
After all, Joshua was her baby boy, and she didn't want to risk ruining their dynamic. Plus, she wasn't even sure if Joshua felt the same way. What if she opened up her heart only to have it broken?
So instead, Maggie had been purposefully distancing herself, hoping that by ignoring Joshua, she could somehow push these newfound emotions aside and return to their previous relationship.
But it wasn't working. Every time her phone buzzed with a missed call or text from him, Maggie's heart would skip a beat.
She found herself making excuses to avoid FaceTime calls, claiming she was busy or out of cell service range when in reality she was sitting alone in her hotel room, desperately longing to see his face.
As she walked along the beach, Maggie kicked at the sand in frustration.
Why did her feelings have to be so complicated? She had come on this vacation to relax and clear her head, but Joshua was all she could think about.
The way his eyes crinkled when he smiled, the sound of his infectious laugh, the warmth of his embrace - it was all permanently etched in her mind.
No matter how hard she tried to push him out of her thoughts, he remained firmly rooted there.
Maggie paused, gazing out at the endless expanse of ocean before her. Maybe she was being too hasty in trying to ignore these feelings.
Perhaps it was time to stop running and face them head-on. After all, Joshua had always been there for her, a steady and reliable presence in her life.
What if he felt the same way? The thought both thrilled and terrified her. Maggie knew that opening herself up to the possibility of a romantic relationship with Joshua could change everything.
But deep down, she couldn't deny that the prospect also filled her with a sense of excitement and possibility.
With a renewed sense of determination, Maggie turned and headed back towards her hotel room.
She needed to stop avoiding Joshua and have an honest conversation with him. It was time to stop pretending and finally admit how she truly felt.
The future was uncertain, but Maggie was tired of living in fear. She was ready to take a chance on love, even if it meant risking their current agreement.
