All four Raptors were closing in on us. Three of them were following the lead of one with blue stripes, which was clearly the leader. They were smiling at us, showing a row of incredible sharp teeth. The sound of the gravel being crushed under them got mixed with their snarls, as they inched closer.
"It's okay. It's okay." Darius kept assuring himself. "Those bones, check for a raptor skull."
"What?" Kenji whimpered.
"In the video game I-"
"You wanna talk about video games now?" Kenji yelled.
"You've got to be kidding me." I said, dumbfounded.
The pack of Raptors led out a loud roar, which made us back up. Darius stumbled in bones on the ground and fell on his ass.
"Get up." I pulled him back up, grabbing a huge bone while at it. "Guys, grab a bone or rock, anything to use as a weapon!"
I clenched my fists over the white bone, it had scratches on its surface, surely it was going to be our future if we didn't do something. We retreated to the gate, which Kenji was still trying to forcefully pry open. I put myself between them and the Raptors, waving the bone in front of me to keep them at a distance. My heart was pounding on my chest as I felt the adrenaline coursing through my veins, my muscles ready to act with the slightest movement from the dinosaurs.
Fear gripped me as I stumbled backward, my mind racing with thoughts of imminent danger. Darius and I exchanged panicked glances, our instincts screaming at us to flee, but it was too late. The velociraptors closed in, their razor-sharp teeth glinting in the dim light.
Just as it seemed like all hope was lost, Tyler appeared out of nowhere. With a commanding presence, he stepped forward, his gaze locked with the advancing velociraptors.
In an astonishing display of bravery, Tyler raised his hand, his voice firm and authoritative. "Easy now, Blue, stand down" he murmured, his words carrying a soothing tone that seemed to calm the frenzied creatures.
To my amazement, the velociraptors halted in their tracks, their aggressive stance softening under Tyler's steady gaze. It was as if they were entranced by his presence, their primal instincts overridden by his commanding aura.
"Axel, grab Darius, Ava, and Kenji," he commanded, his voice cutting through the tension like a knife. And out of nowhere, a huge black raptor grabbed the three of us and took us away from danger, Kenji started panicking and started screaming.
As we caught our breath, safely away from the velociraptors, Darius couldn't contain his curiosity any longer. His eyes were wide with a mixture of awe, fear and confusion as he looked at Tyler.
"Tyler," he began, his voice trembling slightly, "why didn't this raptor attack us when he grabbed us? He's a raptor, after all. Shouldn't he have seen us as prey?"
Tyler turned to face Darius, a calm and reassuring presence despite the chaos that had just unfolded. "Axel isn't just any raptor," Tyler explained. "He's been trained to understand the difference between a threat and a friend. When I give him a command, he follows it because he trusts me and knows that I'll protect him, just as he protects us."
Darius's eyes widened even more, if that was possible. "But how? How did you manage to train a raptor to do that?"
Tyler smiled, his green eyes reflecting a mix of pride and determination. "It's all about building a bond with them. It takes time, patience, and a lot of trust. Axel and I have been through a lot together. He's learned to see me as his best-friend, someone who cares for him and keeps him safe."
Darius glanced at Axel, who was now calmly standing by Tyler's side, looking more like a protective companion than a fearsome predator. "So, when you told Axel to grab us, he knew we weren't a threat?"
