One of the every first things I am going to say about this book.
This isn't going to be as heavy as A Handful of Daffodils. I doubt anything could be as heavy as that book. So much pain went into writing it, so much pain for Menza and in the end she got a bittersweet ending but she was happy. We will get to see her again, I promise you that, we will get to see her be happier, which is what she truly deserves.
But this book won't be as heavy.
Yes there are some heavier themes of course, sexual assault and sexual coercion will be discussed but it will not be shown. But this book will not be as heavy because this book is about letting go. It's about learning to let go of what hurts us, of moving on, moving forward. It's about how you don't need to forgive those who hurt you in order to take those steps forward. It's about learning that you can set those burdens down and walk away, leaving them in the past.
Ezekiel has carried some heavy, heavy, burdens through this series and when we last saw him, he was struggling. He was stuck between the past and the present, wanting to escape it but being barred. He has been struggling since book one, since the very beginning and he deserved to have his struggles ease. Out of everyone, Ezekiel deserves to have a happy ending.
After all, being betrayed by your female and having her reject her and then get you banished from your only home can leave lasting damage and Ezekiel carries scars for it. He might not have wanted to die in the beginning, like Micheal wanted, but his turn as a wild was fraught with danger. He would have died if he hadn't met Luka. His wolf on a rampage, filled with a pain it didn't understand, it lashed out again and again and again until Luka made it so he couldn't anymore.
Luka gave Ezekiel something to hold onto but in this book we learn he is struggling to keep his grip because his overwhelming past is dragging him down hard. He is struck in the struggle of what he needs to do, wanting to go back to how things were but knowing his past is making it impossible. Ezekiel believes he doesn't fit anymore.
Neither does Julieta.
She struggles so hard in this book, trying to figure out where she can find home, what that looks like. She grapples with the decisions she has to make and she tries to hard to find justice in a world where everything has been so unfair.
They are two creatures brought together by the fates, perhaps, just a tiny bit, with Mene's help. Perhaps Mene saw the two struggling hard with their faith in her, their belief in themselves, feeling like they couldn't give anymore because they were tapped out, and she whispered to them both.
"One more time... just one more time with the little you have left to give... This time... this time I'll get it right, I promise."
And those are some words that I hope can carry you all through some tough times.
One more time. Just... just give it one more try.
I'll be with you, cheering on the sidelines because if I can make it to better, so can you.
