Today was a Friday, and I had just finished all of my homework so I wouldn't have any over the weekend. Two essays and project on Tesla, I was spent, but didn't want to go to sleep just yet. I couldn't really go back to my dorm either, my dorm mate - Maggie - was having a heated moment with her boyfriend when I left. I walked into a nearby coffee shop, normally I didn't drink the coffee here unless I had to stay up late and finish homework. I decided on some hot chocolate instead.
After ordering I went over to get some sugar and milk. Another guy was over there too. I hand accidentally brushed with his, my face flushed growing a pink red. "Oh - ah, I'm sorry."
"It's okay, it's fine." We both looked up at the same time. Memories flashed behind my eyes. I recognized the man right away. Although I wasn't to sure if he counted as a man yet. Although we were both now adults he was still tall and awkward looking. Did he know who I was? He'd probably forgotten. It'd only been two years since we only last saw each other, but I didn't see why I would be worth remembering.
"A - hi." He said breathlessly. Like he'd just run ten laps around the track, but that wasn't the case. I panicked, and seemingly incoherently said hi. "Are you here alone?" His voice had changed, but he was still him from when we were kids.
"Ahm yeah, my college is a few blocks from here." A sad look flashed across his face, but it was gone just as quick as it had appeared. "Oh, yeah I'm here with my... Girlfriend - ?" He said it like a question, like he wasn't sure. Like he was sad, but he couldn't be because he couldn't still like me. It had been two years. I had already gotten over him... Or that's just what I kept telling myself.
"Oh, that's cool." I swallowed a growing lump in my throat. At that moment a pretty girl with black hair and dark brown eyes appeared at his shoulder. "Hey who's this?" She sounded peppy and happy - gross.
"I'm just an old friend." A fake expression had masked my face. My walls were finally starting to crumble, I had to go before they all fell away, but my feet were stuck in place.
"So you guys know each other?" Her eyes were bright, and she sounded so happy. I glanced up at him from her, he looked afraid.
I inhaled deeply and kept my eyes locked on her no longer looking at him. My voice was thick and wavering, "We used to." I exhaled and quickly turned away. My feet moved like quicksand was pulling them down. On my way out I bumped into a table, then threw my un-drunken drink in the garbage.
Turning out through the door I stole a glance over my shoulder at him. His face looked broken and sad, the girl was talking to him, but he didn't say anything, just kept staring at me. Regretting looking over my shoulder I turned back to face the front, and began my walk back to my dorm.
