"My little sunshine, wake up." My mom's fingers danced across my sides, pulling giggles from my lips.
"Mommy, stop, I'm up!" I squirmed out of bed and hugged her leg, feeling the warmth of her laughter.
"Aww, I love you, my little sunshine." She scooped me up, carrying me downstairs.
At breakfast, the smell of bacon and waffles filled the air. I drizzled Brown Sugar Cinnamon syrup over my sunny-side-up eggs, savoring every bite. Afterward, I changed into my favorite shirt that proudly declared "Mama's Sunshine" and a pair of jeans.
From downstairs, a familiar voice called out. I rushed down, hoping it was Luna, my Moonflower, the best friend I adored. Her light blonde waves and bright blue eyes always seemed to brighten my day.
"Mommy, who's at the door?" I asked, feeling a flutter of excitement.
"It's Luna," she said, and there she was, standing in a vintage white dress with lavender flats.
"Luna!" My excitement faded as I saw tears in her eyes. "My Moonflower, what's wrong?"
She smiled, even as her tears fell. "Nothing's wrong, My Sunflower. I'm just happy to see you."
"Then why are you crying?" I asked, concern filling my hazel eyes.
"They're happy tears," she assured me. "Let's go to school."
I slipped on my brown sneakers, grabbed her hand, and waved goodbye to my mom. Luna walked me to school, her presence a comforting constant.
*After school*
Luna sprinted outside, and I followed. "Do you want to play hide and seek while we wait for our parents?" I asked, and she nodded eagerly.
"I'll be the seeker," I said, closing my eyes and counting. When I opened them, I heard a rustle behind the blue slide. I dashed over, triumphantly shouting as I reached her hiding spot.
"Got you!" I laughed, but she tagged me with a mischievous grin.
"Seriously, my Moonflower," I shook my head, smiling. "You're the seeker now."
As she counted, her voice echoed across the empty field. I hid among the branches of a tree, but her delighted shout soon found me.
"Okay, you found me," I said, climbing down. But then I saw my mom's car driving past the school. My heart sank. "That's my mom's car. Where is she going?"
Luna's face mirrored my concern, but before she could speak, a car honked. It was my Aunt Evelyn's red Jeep Wrangler.
"Auntie Evelyn, why are you picking me up? Why did my mom drive past?" I asked, confusion mixing with worry.
Auntie Evelyn looked at Luna. "Tell him."
Luna's eyes filled with sorrow. "Look, my Sunflower, I can explain."
"Your mom left," Auntie Evelyn said quietly.
Tears welled up in my eyes. "You knew? How long did you know?" I yelled, my voice breaking.
"I knew since this morning," Luna admitted, trying to hug me.
"NO! I DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT. YOU KNEW AND DIDN'T TELL ME. I'M YOUR BEST FRIEND," I screamed, pushing her away. I climbed into my auntie's car, slamming the door. As we drove away, my tears blurred the world outside.
