The air in the room is rather humid, the sun blaring through the window like a magnifier trying to burn an ant. The ebony cracks his eyes open, staring up at the dirt ceiling, processing his awakening. He sighed, wiping his forehead. He noticed he was unusually sweaty. When he turned his head he found the azure, arm draped over the ebonys chest, his hand caressing his fur. He was clearly still asleep, which for whatever reason made shadow more cautious with his movements. He lied back, staring back up at the ceiling, just waiting for sonic to wake up.
While he waited, he evaluated their situation, as he had been doing for the past few days, slowly trying to cultivate some kind of plan. He'd been gathering a significant amount of data and information about the underground society, the customs, the culture, the patterns. There were almost up to 30- possibly 35 mobians living in the underground bunker, not including sonic and shadow. A good portion of them are hunters- mobians that go out in large groups, finding living beings and well... Hunting them like animals, later taking them back to the base to be served in later meals. A smaller group of mobians are  gatherers, mobians who search for materials to use for base expansion, weapons, so on, so forth, whilst also sometimes bringing back the occasional already dead mobian. A more uncomfortable side of the base has to do with the women. There weren't as many women in the base as there were men, so unfortunately any female in the base will be impregnated and forced to give birth for repopulation purposes. In shadows eyes it was completely messed up, but understandable from a survival standpoint. On top of the women, there are men who help nurse the women and children, and also some women who nurse as well. Shadow had only interacted with a couple women, one who had just given birth a month ago, and another who was 8 months pregnant. They didn't seem to despise or adore how they were being treated by this society, but they were very kind and social.
The king was a complicated subject. He both held all the power and yet... Did nothing at all with it unless it gave him a chance to be selfish. Everyone seemed to be afraid of him for whatever reason, but shadow was less than intimidated by him. A better word would be disgusted. He hated the way that man strutted around, stroking his ego like a dog and shouting demands for no other reason than to demean. He also found his stench to be abhorrent, utterly foul at times, almost as foul as his attitude. The way he treats sonic like some kind of play thing, like a toy.. it made his blood boil.  The ebony had a plan to escape partially formulated in his mind, but he was too nervous to bring it up to sonic, since it could be rather risky and he was worried the azure would make up another excuse like he's been doing for days on end. Shadow sometimes wondered if sonic even really wanted to leave, also fearing that one day sonic may succumb to the sickening lustful grip that mobian flesh gets ahold of you after a certain point. He sometimes worried that he himself would grow to love the flesh as well.
He shook the thought out of his head, getting a glance at sonic, a little shocked to find the azures eyes wide open staring up at him. He was under the impression sonic had been asleep the whole time he was monologuing in his head and wondered how long sonic had been awake.
"Morning." The azure said once shadow noticed him, removing his arm and sitting up to stretch a bit.
"Morning..." Shadow replied softly, remembering the conversation they had last night and feeling a shift in the dynamic.
Sonic sighed. "So, what should we do today?" He asked sort of sarcastically since there really isn't much to do around if you don't have a specific role in the society. Technically sonics role is next to the kings, meaning he holds just as much power, if not more the way people seem to prefer his attitude and personality over knuckles'. Shadows role was equivalent to the role of a below deck dweller living in squalor with the rats, as knuckles couldn't give a single damn about what the ebony does throughout the base. He wondered if that gave the ebony more power than anyone else in a sense, being the only mobian in the base without a role, without rules.
"I think it's time we finally get out of here." Shadow admits, knowing sonic will find it a touchy subject, he decides to just get it all out into the open.
The azure snorts in amusement, as if shadows statement was naively bold. "Us and what army?" He says, trying to immediately dismiss shadows ideas.
Shadow cocks and eyebrow at sonic, becoming somewhat serious.
"Why do you do that?" He asked.
Sonic gets sort of embarrassed, not expecting that kind of response. He cleared his throat. "Do what?"
Shadow sat up further. "You want to get out of here so badly, you talk about it all the time, yet every time I bring up a plan or an idea you shoot it down quicker than I can even finish my sentence."
The azure actively avoided eye contact, his body language now more reserved. He didn't like the fact that shadow was staring at him, waiting for an answer, putting him on the spot like that. There was a significant amount of silence between them for a long time, before shadow decided to try a different approach.
"I have an idea for a plan if you're willing to listen." He said, breaking the silence.
Sonic hesitated.
"I only avoid these conversations because I'm afraid, okay?" He suddenly blurted out "I have this overwhelming anxiety in me, knowing that if we fuck this up we're both meat. It scares me, you know?"
Shadow is a little surprised by sonic sudden outburst but nods back in understanding. He could see why sonic would worry about that, but he felt there were bigger things to be worried about when living with actual cannibals.
"Don't you think it would be better to get out quicker than to just keep delaying it?" The ebony replied. "Sometimes there's never a good moment to do something that absolutely needs to be done, so we need to take matters into our own hands."
Sonic stays silent, nodding halfheartedly and begrudgingly agreeing to listen to shadows plan.
