"Long ago, fierce winged beasts soared the endless skies, their presence a sign of fear in each and every Troll. Their roars pierced through the raging winds, and the shrieks of terrified Trolls echoed among the lands."
"Before the Bergens began their Troll-eating rampage, these beasts would pick off trolls one by one, claws sharp and teeth like daggers. With just a beat of their large, scaly wings, they could knock a Troll over and tear into them before they could react."
"But who were these fearsome beasts? Beasts so large they rivaled the Bergens, beasts so rage-filled they killed anything they saw, beasts so feared the mere mention of them would send Trolls into panic?"
"These terrifying, fire breathing creatures were called -"
"-the dragons." Branch said with a sigh, interrupting his eldest brother John Dory's story.
The younger blue-grey troll tapped his foot as he saw John Dory sigh as well. The younger Trolls listening to him shivered when they heard the mention of dragons. These gigantic beasts were creatures that existed long ago, but had seemed to dissappear a few hundred years before the Bergens arrived.
"Aw, do you not like the dragon story anymore, Bitty B? You used to love it when you were little!" John Dory said, standing up and strutting over to Branch. He took a paw and ruffled his little brother's hair, causing him to emit a hissing sound.
"No, I don't like a fake story about fake creatures from nearly a thousand years ago." Branch said, dragging John Dory's paw away from his head. He looked pretty pissed, but he usually was around his brothers. He wasn't all that particular to them again yet.
"Listen, if dragons were ever actually real, they either died out after a while or moved off to find bigger prey." Branch said before looking at the younger Trolls. They had turned to face him with wide eyes and upturned ears.
"Or maybe us Trolls got stronger and chased off the big, scary dragons before they could ever catch you, Bitty B!" John Dory said with a bellowing laugh. He obviously wasn't taking Branch seriously, but there weren't many times that he did.
"Well, I could've beaten them off myself..." Branch mumbled out of earshot from John Dory.
"Oh, excuse me, mister Branch! Did the Trolls ever fight off the dragons?" A little yellow Troll with tied up blue hair said. Her tail wagged with curiosity as she asked.
"Well, some records show that mostly the Country and Rock Trolls did. They built things like catapults filled with rocks or flaming haybales. There was also arrows with flaming tips used, and spears with scale-piercing metal." He said as he began to rant about ways to defeat a dragon. He had certaintly researched the topic a lot, but only kept the information for different types of predators since ue didn't believe in dragons anymore.
"Huh, you know a lot for someone who doesn't beleive in them." John Dory chuckled, patting his little brother on the shoulder. Branch scowled and flinched away from his brother's touch, but his face showed a hint of uncomfort as he flinched.
"Well, what am I standing here talking about them for? The point is that they don't exist and probably never did, and it's pretty stupid to talk about them." Branch said before scoffing and stomping out of the ground pod.
The morning sun shone down bright on Pop Village as the settlement began to burst with life. Many Trolls began to wake up and leave for the day. Young Trolls raced around the flower patches, while older Trolls tended to the larger gardens. Dew from the night before sparkled on the fresh green grass, while a light mist hung among the trees.
It was a nice, comfortable morning that Branch would have enjoyed had it not been for that stupid dragon story John Dory was telling. Branch could barely believe dragons once existed, long ago, but a part of him still believed there was a chance. If creatures as big as the Bergens could live for so long, then maybe the dragons could too.
Oh, what am I thinking? They couldn't have existed if they just disappeared so easily! Branch thought to himself with a scowl. How could they exist like that? It almost seemed impossible.
His tail trailing along the dew, Branch walked up to one of the tallest trees in the village. He then leaped up onto the bark and clung on with his claws. He sprung up from branch to branch, determined to check at his usual outpost. He'd started checking it every morning after hearing strange noises in the area.
As he climbed to the longest branch, though, he found an alarming sight sitting in the middle of the branch. There, encased by a thick shield of leaves, was a tiny lizard-like creature with claws, a long tail, and large, scaly wings.
It was a baby dragon.
The baby dragon screeched in terror as it noticed Branch at the end of the branch. It shivered, covering its wings over its tiny body. It cowered as it backed away from Branch, who slowly crawled closer.
What is a dragon doing here? They're all supposed to be gone! Branch thought, his senses heightened with fear. As he thought about the odd possibility, though, he heard an alarming sound underneath them.
The sound of snapping wood. The branch was beginning to crack under their weight. As the dragon shuffled back, there was a large snap as a chunk of wood fell to the forest floor.
The baby dragon suddenly panicked, rearing up on its hind legs and blasting a beam of flame on the branch. With a final heavy snap, the part the dragon stood on completely collapsed.
And it took the baby dragon down with it.
