Harriet's POV

Savoring the meaty texture of the lasagna, along with the sauce and melted ricotta cheese left a satisfying feeling in my stomach. After washing it down with some Wild Cherry Pepsi, I decided to break the ice by telling my parents about me being a writer. "I'm gonna write stories."

"You're gonna what?" My mother stammered, almost choking on her food.

"I said, I'm gonna write stories," a hint of annoyance in my tone.

"Young lady, there's no future in writing!" My father said. "It's a total waste of time!"

"It's fun!" I protested. "I'm just doing what I think is my true calling!"

"We never even seen you write!" My mother snapped. "No daughter of ours is gonna pursue a career in writing!"

"It's just for fun, Mom!"

"I don't care! The answer is no!"

"You guys just don't understand how much writing means to me!" I shot back. "It's just something that kicked in! I want to unleash my creative potential! I feel the creativity inside me!"

"If you don't hush up about this nonsense, I'll slap you silly!" My mother warned. "Do you hear me?"

"But Mom!"

"Do. You. Hear. Me?"

"Yes," I sighed.

"Yes what?" My mother demanded.

"Yes, Ma'am."

"If you want to keep arguing with us, we're sending you to your room!" My father said. "Do we have an understanding?"

"Yes, sir," I replied. "I don't understand. There's a lot of people that write. Why can't I?"

"Just because," said my mother. "Now, hush up, and finish eating your dinner."

"I have to leave now, I'm going to work." My father quickly left the table, and left to go to Piggly Wiggly. He takes people's carriages full of items to their vehicles.

I was done eating, and helped my mother wash the dishes. While she was humming, I sent her a scowl that she didn't notice. How dare she and Dad step in my way of doing what I want to do? What is wrong with writing? First, it was my friend Amy, and now my parents?

I would definitely prove them wrong.
