it all started back when they were five. they were neighbors and their mothers frequently talked, along with their fathers occasionally when the two men would see each other.
nayoung was always a bubbly girl, saying hi to everyone she could and always helping out her elders.
renjun, on the other hand, was a rather shy boy and stuck to himself. he didn't talk much, but that was okay because nayoung always made sure to fill the silence up with her own voice.
they went to the same kindergarten together, making friends. renjun followed nayoung around most of the time as he didn't really know anyone there but her.
and then came the grades.
—
first grade was okay, renjun was finally learning how to warm up to nayoung and her naturally bubbly self and nayoung thought that was a win.
that summer they both spent time together outside in each other's backyards, rushing to eat their popsicles before they melted underneath the hot sun and playing around like little kids underneath the cool moonlight.
—
second grade was better. the only reason why nayoung says that? because he finally allowed her to hug him as before he would shake his head and she would get the memo.
that summer they spent it with their grandparents, although they didn't really want to as they wanted to stay together. but when they came back, renjun had practically tackled the other girl in a hug. he came back with a rose quartz bracelet that his grandma had given him, shyly giving it to her as her starry eyes lit up even more and she smiled so widely and also showed him a bracelet she had made herself just for him.
—
third grade was a bit complicated as some other boys and girls tried to also get in their friendship. renjun didn't really like that a lot. he didn't know why. but it was definitely not because he wanted nayoung all to himself! .. okay maybe that was why.
that summer, he was forced to watch nayoung be her social self with other kids that had moved into the neighborhood. he wasn't really all that mad though, her smile was really pretty..
—
fourth grade was better than third grade. he learned to make friends with the other kids, even finding out that two of them were also from china like him! he liked that. he really liked that a lot. chenle and yizhou were nice, he liked them. but nayoung was nicer, and he liked her more.
that summer was probably one of the best, in his opinion. the friends all had fun at the beach and the playground, they even went over to chenle's house! that was probably the first time he's gone over to one of his friend's houses, other than nayoung of course.
—
fifth grade was a little nerve wracking though. it was their last year as little kids as next year they would be going to middle school. and he definitely wanted to make it count.
that summer was probably one he would never forget. nayoung, minjeong, jaemin, jeno, and he, were riding their bikes down to the corner store and these older kids tried to pick on the girls. the three younger boys all stood up to the older boys, protecting the girls.
renjun didn't know why or how, but the next thing he knew is that nayoung was holding his hand and putting one of the icepacks in his fridge up to his cheek. he was grumbling about the older kids, but immediately stopped as he heard her cute giggle and her cheeks flush a soft faint pink. and then he felt her warm, soft lips press a chaste kiss to his cold cheek as she muttered a small "thank you, junnie. you're my hero."
yeah. he was her hero.
