As Amy and Andrei screeched to a stop in front of the emergency room entrance, fear gripped Amy's throat and her heart pounded against her ribs. They arrived at 125, the number boldly painted on the door. Rushing inside, her breath caught in her throat. The carefree girl who had once chased butterflies with Michael was gone, replaced by a woman consumed by fear and a fierce protectiveness for the man she loved. On the bed lay a figure completely wrapped in bandages, head to toe. Machines beeped rhythmically, their electronic hum serving as a constant reminder of the frail state of the person beneath the sterile white mask. It was Michael, but he appeared broken and unrecognizable compared to the man she had recently grown close to. A single choked sob escaped her lips, a raw sound that shattered the sterile silence of the room. Tears streamed down her face, blurring the sight before her. She approached the bed and sank to her knees. "Michael," she managed to choke out, her voice trembling. It was barely audible, yet it reverberated in the quiet of the room.
A muffled groan emanated from the figure on the bed, a testament to the pain he was enduring. It was the only response she received. Suddenly, a hand settled on her shoulder, a gentle touch that grounded her in the midst of her emotional turmoil. She turned to see Andrei, his face etched with concern. "The doctors said it was a nasty accident, but they're working on him," he reassured her. She slowly stood up, covering her face as a surge of unexpected emotion overwhelmed her. In a swift movement, she threw herself at Andrei, burying her face in his chest as she hugged him. The sudden embrace caught Andrei off guard, his heart skipping a beat in his chest. Hesitantly, he wrapped his arms around her, his touch gentle as he patted her back in a comforting rhythm. She sobbed in Andrei's arms, pouring her heart out in her cries. Footsteps approached slowly from the hallway. A figure emerged through the doorway, casting a shadow across the floor. Amy lifted her head, her tear-streaked eyes looking towards the door. Confusion washed over her face as she saw Michael standing there.
Michael stood tall and relatively unharmed, unlike the bandaged figure lying on the bed beside her. He had only bandages wrapped around his head and hands. The expression on his face was a mix of confusion and something deeper - a flicker of heartwarming gratitude for the depth of emotion Amy showed towards him. Disbelief crossed Amy's features as she pulled away from Andrei, her gaze shifting between Michael and Andrei. Meeting Andrei's eyes, she demanded, "What is the meaning of this?" Her voice shook with a mix of anger and betrayal. Andrei offered an apologetic smile, a nervous chuckle escaping his lips. "Sorry about that, Amy. Just a little prank. Couldn't resist." The confusion turned into a spark of anger as she thought, "A prank? This is not what I need right now." A shiver ran through her body. Sadness was one thing, but this elaborate charade felt insensitive and manipulative. "You put me through all this... seeing him like that... just for your own amusement?" she spat, her voice trembling. "I can't believe it..."
The betrayal crackled in the air like a live wire sparking between them. Before Andrei could even stammer an explanation, Amy's hand lashed out, connecting with a solid smack against his chest. The sound echoed in the sterile silence of the room as Andrei stumbled back, a flicker of pain contorting his face and his hand instinctively flying to where the blow landed. Ignoring him completely, Amy spun on her heel and stormed out of the room, passing Michael, who stood there bewildered with his hand reaching out to stop her. "Amy, wait!" he called out, his voice laced with urgency as he lunged for her arm. She twisted away, the anger twisting her features as he caught her forearm with a firm but gentle grip. "Let me explain," he pleaded, his brow furrowing in concern. But Amy was a storm in motion, thrashing against his hold with tears welling in her eyes. Unable to break free, her legs gave way, and she crumpled to the floor, sobs erupting from her like a dam bursting. Michael's heart twisted at her raw despair as he knelt beside her, pulling her into a comforting hug. "Shh," he murmured, his voice a soothing balm. "It's okay. I'm here now."
