The rest of my day was…awkward. Adrian was in all of my classes! There was some kind of pull towards him. Every time I would zone out, my eyes would always find their way back to him. But there was no way he would look at a girl like me. The girl who doesn’t have any friends or any family. The girl who hasn’t talked in school, unless absolutely necessary for teachers. He practically had every girl undressing just so he could glance at them.
By the time the end of school came, I was at my locker gathering my books I needed for homework. I heard the locker next to me open. Huh, the locker next to mine? No one has had that locker this whole year. I quickly peeked at my neighbor, who turned out to be the infamous Adrian Gammie. Oh joy! How lucky am I? I thought sarcastically. I slammed my locker shut. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Adrian flinch.
“Hey-“he began, but I didn’t let him finish. I had to go back to my personal hell. Walking to my car I saw several girls give me death glares. Guess they saw Adrian trying to talk to me. I sighed. They have nothing to be jealous about. I hopped in my car and blasted the radio. I belched out the words to the song. Attempting to forget everything that happened. A tear welled up in my eye as I neared the funeral home. I knew I was going to be late for work but I have to do this now or never. I parked my mom’s-I mean my car, took a deep breath, and entered the funeral home.
The bells atop of the door chimed against the door as I nudged it open. An older woman looked up from her computer screen, “Hello darling!” she bellowed “How may I help you?” I paused for a moment. A taken back by the amount of energy she had for an elderly woman working at a funeral home. Snapping out of my confusion I slowly trotted up to the counter.
“Yes, my mother died last night unfortunately. I would like to have a casket for her and a formal burial service,” I croaked out. My voice raspy from the years of silence. Her eyes widened as she processed the weight of my words. Guess no more Mrs. Sunshine.
“Ah yes” she spoke finally after a few silent moments. Almost as if she realized where she working again. “You’ll have to pick out the casket and assign a day for the ceremony. How old are you darling?" I hesitated. If I told her I was only 17 she would have to call my father. I do not want that man to ruin my mother’s burial.
“I’m 19 years old.” I replied. I thought I could pull off being 19, 20 years old was a stretch. She looked me over, as I deciding whether or not to believe me. My breath caught in my throat. After what seemed like forever she curtly nodded.
“Okay hun. What you need to do is fill out these forms.” She handed me a packet of forms. “Also we’re going to need to pick up the bod- I mean your mother, so we can get it ready and change her clothes for the service. I will schedule a pick-up tomorrow at 3pm. Is that all right?”
“Yes.” Thank god I get out of school at 2pm. I quickly thanked her for her help and left the funeral home. A wind wafted through the doors as I stepped outside, the bell ringing crazily. I sucked in the fresh blowing air. I was holding back tears the entire visit. I tried to calm down my clabbered breathing as I strolled down to my car. A tear escaped my eye. I hopped into the car and blasted the music, screaming along to the lyrics. I don’t care if anyone thought I was insane. I needed to control these emotions before I arrived home to my demon.
