"I've never been so grateful for remotes," Dakota sighs. When she stands, I give up and turn the volume back on. The guns continue, and Dakota falls back on the couch. "You could've done that before I got up."
I purse my lips, irritated. "Whatever, you just watch your show."
"Shush! I'm trying to watch." She doesn't even bother to turn to me.
I look down again at the blue plastic ring around my finger, and the stub where the candy used to be. I doubt Ty intended for me to keep it, but it seemed like throwing it away when I finished was like throwing away a scrapbook full of memorabilia. Sure, it's not a wedding ring (sadly!), but for all I know, it could be the first step to something special. And with that thought, I smile.
My phone suddenly buzzes on the counter on front of me, and a familiar tone rings out.
"Ty!" I scramble to grab it, slapping my arms across the counter, then I act normal when Dakota turns to give me a look. "Lovesick!" she mouthes.
"Hey," Ty says. "Still have time for Flaming Ice?"
"Yeah," I say excitedly. "Of course, I'm free right now!"
"Awesome, see ya in five."
I beam as I hang up and try not to squeal, my sullen feelings from earlier completely dissolved. "Ty's coming!" I sing. Then I pause. "Wait, Ty's coming in five minutes!" I jump up and scurry out of the kitchen. "Oh no! My room, the pizza, the stereo!" I'm sure Dakota rolls her eyes.
It was too bad I didn't say anything to Ty about...certain things, but I still have a chance. Today may not be the day, but that day is someday soon, I'm sure of it. Although Chloe's been popping up a lot, I know her days with Ty are long gone. She had her chance and failed, and now it's my turn!
The autumn days were nice, but if my hopes prevail, they'll be nothing compared to my winter days with Ty.
I grin to myself. When I'm done, Chloe won't even stand a chance.
