Wolfies pov
It had been two long years since Pinky arrived, but the whispers of an upcoming mission had been steadily growing louder. The guards spoke in hushed tones about it being our very first mission, and I couldn't help the excitement that bubbled within me.
My wolf was just as eager, her presence a constant companion in the back of my mind. "The moon, wolfie!" she would say wistfully. "The moon has such beautiful colors at night - reds and oranges and blues. And it's only visible when it's night the day is so bright, you hardly need any other light."
Listening to her descriptions, I longed to see the outside world for myself. To feel the cool night air and bask in the glow of the otherworldly moon. But for now, I was confined to these sterile walls, eagerly awaiting whatever this mission might entail My demon sighed at our conversation. "You'll never be free even if you do get to see any of that"
A light tap on my door pulled me from my reverie, and I looked up to see Songbird, the siren, leaning against the frame. "Hey, 'Wolfie,' food's here," he said, the familiar nickname rolling off his tongue. I couldn't help but chuckle as I followed him to the lounge, where Michael, was already handing Red his as we'd taken to calling the fire fae his tray.
Our meals were always carefully portioned, and we weren't allowed to share even a crumb. I grimaced as I eyed the raw, bloody boar meat on my tray, wishing they'd at least add a touch of sweetness as they did for the pink haired boy. My wolf rumbled with satisfaction at the sight of the crimson flesh, but I longed for something more my demon agreeing.
After our trays were cleared, we began our usual pre-training rituals. But today, the routine was shattered when Dr. Sinclair burst through the doors, flanked by two armed guards. "Follow me, all four of you," she commanded, her voice terse and unyielding.
Exchanging bewildered glances, we trailed after the guards, taking an unfamiliar turn down a long, dimly lit hallway. As we entered a room filled with more officials and security personnel, a bald man stood before us, clearing his throat to command our attention.
"Welcome, you four," he began, his tone grave and serious. "It's time." He glanced down at the file in his hands, then gestured to the screen behind him, which flickered to life.
"You are the only successful prototypes we've managed to create in ten years. And now, your time to be useful has come." His eyes swept across us, and I felt my wolf prowling restlessly within me, her curiosity piqued.
"Your first mission will take you to the capital of Lumarst - a vampire nation with over 144.5 million people, the largest in the world. You will go undercover and get as close as possible to the queen, duke, and prince."
My wolf stirred restlessly, her head raised at the mention of vampires. She had heard tales of their ruthlessness, their insatiable thirst for blood. I could feel her anxious energy pulsing through our shared connection, and I reached out to her, trying to soothe her concerns. My hands began to tremble, and I noticed red beside me flapping his wings nervously. As the bald man continued to outline the details of our mission, a sense of both anticipation and dread settled over us. This was our chance to see the outside world, but at what cost? After the brief meeting, we were all given files about the mission and sent to our quarters. Sitting down around the coffee table in the lounge, we went through discussing the topic and the best way to approach it. Suddenly, the shapeshifter nudged me, "You know this means we can eat anything we want, guys!"
All three of us laughed at him, and my mind drooled with the thoughts of all the delectable food my demon was somewhat happy at the thought. Songbird smirked, "And we can try on normal clothes!" The fire fae shook his head before waving us closer and whispering, "Or we could be free."
We began getting excited, but then Pinky pointed something out, "We can't if we're collared like dogs on a shock collar of death." Songbird sighed, "Right."
We went back to looking at the details of the mission, but my eyes kept lingering on the picture in one of the files, my stomach in a knot. After a few hours of planning details and playing gin rummy, the door opened with our food. My demon, Erebus, sensing the food, had me getting up to grab mine first. After seeing the bland, lifeless food on the tray before me, a primal fury erupted within my mind. Erebus, the demon that resided in the depths of my psyche, began to thrash and roar, clawing at the barriers I had so carefully constructed to keep him contained.
"Damn it, you were silent all day and now you want to act up over food?" I yelled, my voice laced with a guttural edge as I felt my body begin to tremble. Myrddin, the wolf that served as my anchor, tried in vain to soothe Erebus, her calming presence a mere flicker against the raging inferno that now consumed my mind.
I dropped to a squat, clutching my head as the demon's influence spread, tendrils of dark energy snaking through my veins. The room around me seemed to warp and distort, the voices of my companions fading into a muffled cacophony as my senses became overwhelmed.
Myrddin howled desperately, her anguished cries echoing within the confines of my mind, but Erebus paid her no heed. He was ravenous, fueled by the sight and scent of the unsatisfying meal before me - a cruel mockery of the sustenance my body craved.
The guards rushed towards me, their weapons drawn, but I barely registered their presence. All I could focus on was the pounding of my heart, the roar of Erebus, and the overwhelming need to escape, to find nourishment that would quell the demon's insatiable hunger.
As Erebus clawed at the edges of my consciousness, I felt my control slipping away. My vision blurred, darkness creeping in at the corners, and I struggled to maintain a tenuous hold on my sanity. The guards shouted, their voices distant and muffled, but I heard only the savage growls of the demon that threatened to consume me.
Myrddin fought with everything she had, her spirit intertwining with mine in a desperate attempt to regain control. But Erebus was relentless, his power growing with each passing moment, and I could feel the last vestiges of my humanity slipping away.
The air crackled with energy, the very fabric of reality seeming to distort around me as Erebus's influence spread. The guards hesitated, their weapons wavering, and I knew that at that moment, I was a ticking time bomb, a threat that they were unsure how to confront.
Time seemed to slow to a crawl, and in that fleeting instant, I caught a glimpse of the fear in the eyes of my companions. They had seen this before, this dark transformation that threatened to consume me, and they knew the danger that I posed.
With a final, agonizing roar, Erebus surged forward, his power coalescing into a tangible force that threatened to break free from the fragile confines of my mind. The world around me erupted into chaos, and as I felt the last vestiges of my control slipping away, I uttered a silent prayer, begging for the strength to hold on, to not let the demon win.
The guards moved in, their weapons raised, and I braced myself for the inevitable. This was the moment I had both dreaded and anticipated, the moment when the darkness within me would be laid bare for all to see. And as the world around me descended into madness, I knew that nothing would ever be the same again the guards fired off a shot and my wolf held back Erebus so It would workA/n
