As she stands up and climbs up onto the railing, the words "close your eyes and jump" ring through her head. She looks down, gazing at the rushing water flow over the jagged rocks below her. "Just close your eyes and jump," she thinks to herself. Close your eyes. And jump.

"Melody!!!~" my mother calls from downstairs. I roll my eyes, already having an idea of what she's calling me for.

I struggle to get out of bed due to the tiredness of staying up all night drawing. Drawing is the only thing that keeps my mind away from thinking to far. It helps express emotions.

I get up and slip on a pair of shoes. Walking down the stairs, each step I feel my heart get heavier, knowing my mother only ever talks to me when she needs something done for her. Having the thought of knowing my mother wouldn't care if I disappeared or not isn't a very pleasant one.

As I get downstairs the smell of alcohol attacks my nose. My mother looks at me, hands me money and asks to go buy her more cigarettes from the store. I can feel my self get more and more pissed but i keep it in as theres nothing i can do about whats happening. I take the money out my mother's hand, not saying a word as i grab my jacket and leave the house, not really caring for what I look like.

My father's probably at work, or I hope he is. He has a strong history of cheating on my mother, with co-workers, strippers, prostitutes, any woman who is willing to give herself away just like that.
They fight everyday and don't even sleep in the same room. I dont know why they're still together to be honest.

As I walk outside, I feel a breeze, the wind always manages to calm me down. I see my little sister playing with the brown and orange leafs. I can't leave her here outside by herself while our irresponsible mother is on the couch drugged up watching her shows on full blast.

"Maria" I call. She looks up and smiles, running towards me. I pick her up and explain to her that we are going on an adventure. She looks at me with a sparkle in her eye. The sparkle she's always had, no matter how scary or tough the situation was she had it. It brought me hope. Maria is 5 and I'm 16. She's my half sister but I still love her with everything I have.
I remember when mom was pregnant with her. She somehow convinced my dad that the child was his even tho Maria was born with dark straight hair. Me, dad and mom all have brunette curly hair. She also has green eyes, which should've automatically triggered something in my sorry excuse of a dad's brain since no one on both sides of the family have or had green eyes. But it is what it is I guess.

I feel the wind pick up as i continue my journey to the store a few blocks away with Maria gripping onto my right hand. "Where are we going?" Maria asks looking up at me. "We're going down to the store to get some stuff." I say. "What stuff?" She asks.
I love this child but sometimes she can asks to many questions. "You'll find that out once we get there."
"Aww~" Maria whines "but I wanna know now~." I sigh, picking her up. "We're gonna go get things for mom."

"I asked WHAT are we going to get, not for WHO."
Oh and did I mention she has sass twice the height of her.

"We're going to get cigarettes" I sigh in defeat. "Cigarettes."
Maria doesn't say anything and lays her head on my shoulder, letting herself rest.

We get there not long after and walk in. I see group of guys, probably somewhere in their late 40's, eyeing me hungrily. I shudder at the thought and carry on, holding Maria tighter. I quickly grab my mother's favorite brand and pull out the cash she gave me. Realizing it's not enough I put Maria down and pull out the extra cash I had in my back pocket. As I was paying for the things I hear one of the men calling over Maria. I look in their direction and grab Maria's shoulder. She knows not to go near strangers, especially wierd old men but still, you never know. They look to me and smirk. "Buying cigarettes I see" chuckles one of the men. "When your done why don't you and the little one come back with us. She can play with the other kids and you and us can have a little talk." I don't respond. Just look at him like he has shit smeared all over his face. Which I would believe if someone told me cause he definitely smells like it.

I quickly grab the cigarettes, pick up Maria and leave. Leaving the spare change on the counter. I can hear them laugh as i speed walk away. "Dick heads" Maria rolls her eyes. "Maria!!" I scold. "Sorry sorry."
"It's true tho" I hear her whisper to herself.
I say nothing and carry on walking, as the wind sings its own melody.
