~Who cares if one more light goes out in the sky of a million stars??~

~•♡♧•~

I walk inside and set Maria down telling her to go to her room. As i walk towards the couch i see my mother passed out. I don't make an attempt to wake her up or she'll throw a fit and start shouting and throwing things. I set the cigarettes down on the table and go upstairs. As I walk towards Mia's room I tell her to go next door to play with the neighbors kid. Mia was close friends with the kid next door, Devondré. He was around the same age as her. Whenever I had no energy to look after her she went and played with him.
She puts her shoes on and I watch her go next door to make sure she got there safely.

I walk back inside and head to the kitchen to make something to eat. I open the fridge to reveal nothing inside. A sigh escapes my mouth as I turn around to leave the kitchen, I step forward and feel something sharp peirce my foot. I let out a shriek as I fall to the ground. I look at my foot to find a broken piece of a beer bottle lodged into the middle of my right foot. I sit on the kitchen floor and let out a sob. Tears build up in my eyes as the pain increases. My vision becomes blurry as I see a figure come towards me. "Shut up." I recognize the voice as the witch I live with. "What are you doing on the floor?!" She pulls my hair as an attempt to get me off her floor I let out a groan as I hit her hand away and struggle up and try to get away into my room before she can make a scene. As i painfully hop up the stairs i can hear her scream at me but thank the lord she doesn't come for me. I can tell she's heavily intoxicated, the way she slurred her words and my nose actually burns from the smell of alcohol.

Tears run down my cheeks as I enter the bathroom and lock the door behind me. I open the cabinet and grab the first aid kit. I pull out the tweezers, bandages and everything else and set myself up on the chair in the side of the room. I take the tweezers and brace myself for whats about to happen. I place the tweezers onto the piece of glass and slowly pull it out. I groan as blood starts running down my foot onto the floor. Now that I took the shard out, it's much larger than I thought it was.

I wrap my foot up, put the kit away and clean the mess. I limp back into my room and put socks and a pair of shoes on just to be careful.

I check the time and it's around 3 o'clock. "I'll get Mai at 6" I say to myself but for now I grab my note book, a pencil and flop onto my bed. I start to draw. I don't know what I'm drawing, I'm just letting whatever my hand does go onto the paper. I start to feel myself drift off and soon my eyes close.

I wake up and see the street lights are on and the stars are out. I can here my dad screaming at my mom and I sigh...

My eyes widen as I realized I had completely forgotten about Maria. I check the time to see it's 9:30. I rush to my feet forgetting about what had happened earlier. A sharp pain shoots up my foot and I fall to the ground with a thud. I let in a painful breath but get up quickly to go get Maria. I race down the stairs as fast as I could, ignoring those 2 pigs shouting at eachother for no good reason. I go completely unseen as I open the door to see Mai sitting on the steps infront of the door with tear stained cheeks. I grab her and hurriedly go inside, dragging her up the stairs with me.

We enter my room and I lock the door just incase one of them decide to take their anger out on us. I sit down on the bed with her facing me on my lap. "I'm so sorry Mia, I didn't mean to leave you for so long. What happened?? Why are you crying??"

She looks at me and that's when I see the big blue bruise on her cheek. I gasp. Shock taking over my body as I freeze. Guilt washing over me. Tears build up in my eyes as i ask her again. "What happened Maria??"

She looks up at my as tears fall down onto her cheeks. "I decided to come back home by myself but mommy and daddy were fighting. And then when I opened the door daddy came and slapped me saying I'm not his daughter and shut the door."

Another gasp escapes my mouth as I realize that my father now knows that Mia isn't his actual daughter. I pull her closer to me, hugging her tight and letting her know she's safe now. Soon she's fast asleep. I tuck her under the blankets and do the same for myself. Switching off the lights I start to hum a song. Attempting to drown out the noise of the people I call parents. And soon enough, I join Mia.

Hugging her tightly. Promising to protect her.
