9th April, Storrs Connecticut
IT WAS CURRENTLY ONE IN THE MORNING, and Kyla was completely unable to fall asleep. She decided to wander outside of the room she had enclosed herself in since KK had been on TikTok live and Paige had completely ignored her.
The house was eerily quiet, the only sound being the faint hum of the refrigerator and the occasional creak of the wooden floors under her feet. Kyla wrapped her arms around herself, feeling a chill that had nothing to do with the temperature.
She found herself standing in the doorway of the living room, where Paige was sprawled out on the couch, staring at her phone. The blonde didn't notice Kyla at first, her focus entirely on whatever she was scrolling through.
Kyla cleared her throat softly, hesitant. "Can't sleep?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Paige looked up, surprise flickering across her features before she quickly masked it. "Yeah, something like that," she replied, sitting up and putting her phone aside.
"Look... this doesn't have to be awkward or anything." Kyla shrugged, attempting to ease the clear tension, "We're both adults."
Paige's gaze lingered on Kyla, her expression guarded yet contemplative. "Doesn't it?" she finally responded, her tone layered with complexity.
"I... um," Kyla trailed off, not wanting to say the wrong thing. She took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts. "I just think we shouldn't let one night, that we can't even fully remember, define everything. We can be friends, or at least civil."
Paige's eyes flashed with something Kyla couldn't quite decipher. "So, you really just want to forget it, huh? Pretend nothing happened?"
"No, that's not what I meant," Kyla said quickly, frustration creeping into her voice. "I just don't want to make things more complicated than they already are. The entire internet think we hate each other. Hell, I thought we hated each other!"
Paige stood up, her expression unreadable. "If you want to pretend nothing matters... thats fine."
Kyla felt her chest tighten, the conversation slipping out of her control. "I'm not saying nothing matters. I'm saying we should try to move past it. I want to be your friend, Paige."
"I don't want to be your friend, Kyla." Paige muttered.
Kyla stared at her, the weight of those words hitting her harder than she expected, her eyes naturally flickering down to her lips. The air between the two grew thick with tension and longing.
Paige's breath hitched, and for a moment, she leaned in ever so slightly. Kyla's heart pounded in her chest as she closed the distance, her lips a mere inch from Paige's. The world seemed to stand still, the silence filled with unspoken words and unacknowledged feelings.
Just as their lips were about to touch, Paige abruptly pulled back suddenly, "I'm not doing this," she stated, her voice strained. "You'll probably just want to forget this in the morning too."
Kyla's heart sank, the brief moment of connection slipping away. "That's not fair, Paige," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "I don't want to forget anything."
Paige looked away, her expression a mask of conflicted emotions. "Maybe you don't right now, but you will. And I can't handle that."
The room felt colder, the distance between them now a chasm. Kyla took a step back, wrapping her arms around herself. "I guess we're both just scared then," she said softly.
Paige just sighed, "Sure."
Kyla scoffed, frustration boiling over. "Okay, Paige," she muttered, turning on her heel and leaving the room. Her heart remained racing as it had since Paige entered the vicinity.
As she retreated to her room, Kyla couldn't shake the lingering tension. She closed the door behind her and leaned against it, running a hand through her hair. The confusion and hurt eating at her, making sleep seem even more impossible.

you wouldn't be impressed9th April, Storrs Connecticut
PAIGE WOKE UP WITH A BANGING HEADACHE, a consequence of the little sleep she had gotten after her heated discussion with Kyla in the early hours of the morning.
She had spent hours replaying their conversation over and over in her head. It was obvious they wanted each other, yet Paige couldn't act on it when Kyla seemed so afraid.
The tweet Kyla had posted earlier had only confused Paige more. Her conflicting feelings left her with no clear direction. She was completely unsure of what to do.
She couldn't tell whether Kyla was playing games or not. Maybe it was for the best. They lived in different states, and Paige wouldn't see the brunette for at least a little while after Kyla left for South Bend in a few days.
The Notre Dame girl had gone out early that morning to spend the day with who Paige presumed were her brother and best friend. Paige, on the other hand, lay in bed, regretting the confusing and incoherent choices she had been making lately.
The blonde had talked things through with Azzi, who had been completely unhelpful while they tried to piece together the puzzle that was Kyla Kovlova. Her actions were contradictory, and it was driving Paige crazy.
At least she wouldn't have to see Kyla much after a few days. Maybe then Paige could finally relax and erase Kyla from her thoughts.
