The Choice

Emily's eyes locked onto Sophia, who was still struggling to free herself from the figure's grasp.

Emily knew she had to act fast, but her mind was torn.

She could use the crystal's power to try and save Jake's life, but it would mean going against everything they had learned about the ancient ritual.

The texts had warned of the risks of meddling with forces beyond their control, and Emily knew that using the crystal's power could have unintended consequences.

Or she could use the crystal's power to exact revenge on the figure, to make it pay for what it had done to Jake.

But that would mean embracing a darkness within herself, a darkness that she wasn't sure she was ready to confront.

As she stood there, frozen in indecision, the figure began to stir. It rose to its feet, its mask glinting with malevolent intent.

"You're hesitating," it said, its voice dripping with contempt. "You're weak. You should've just let him die."

Emily's anger surged, and with a fierce cry, she raised her hands to the sky. The crystal's power erupted from her, bathing the figure in a blinding light.

The figure stumbled back, covering its eyes, and Emily took advantage of the distraction. She rushed forward, her eyes fixed on Jake's lifeless body.

She poured all her energy into him, using the crystal's power to try and heal his wounds.

The air seemed to shimmer and distort as she worked her magic, and slowly but surely, Jake began to stir.

As he opened his eyes, Emily felt a rush of relief wash over her. He was alive.

But as she turned to face the figure, she realized that her actions had not gone unnoticed.

The figure had been watching her, studying her, and now it was preparing to strike.

"You may have saved your friend," it said, its voice dripping with hatred. "But you've only made things worse for yourself."

And with that, it vanished into thin air, leaving Emily and Sophia staring at each other in confusion.

"What just happened?" Sophia asked, her voice shaking.

Emily shook her head. "I'm not sure," she said. "But I think we've made a big mistake."

As they stood there, trying to make sense of what had happened, they heard a strange noise coming from outside the temple. It sounded like footsteps, heavy and deliberate.

"What's that?" Sophia whispered.

Emily's eyes narrowed. "I think we're not alone anymore."
