Asuka smoothed out Shotaro's uniform, a satisfied smile playing on her lips. She was always happy when she got what she wanted. Her hands moved with practiced ease, adjusting the collar and straightening the tie, ensuring everything was perfect. Shotaro fought the urge to flinch; he knew that if he flinched, he'd be in trouble.
"There," she said, stepping back to admire her work. "You look presentable now. Remember, first impressions are important. Karasuno may not be my first choice, but you will still uphold the Nakamura name."
Shotaro stood still, his expression blank as he avoided her gaze. The uniform felt heavy, like a physical manifestation of the expectations weighing him down.
Asuka's smile widened a hint of pride in her eyes. "You'll join the volleyball team, of course. I expect nothing less than excellence from you, Shotaro. You have the talent; it's time to use it."
"Your father and I have high hopes for you," she continued, her tone dripping with condescension. "Don't disappoint us. This is your chance to prove yourself and show everyone that you can live up to the Nakamura legacy."
She brushed a nonexistent speck of dust from his shoulder, her touch cold and impersonal. "Now, go. Make sure you arrive on time and give it your best. Remember, I expect regular reports on your progress."
Shotaro nodded stiffly, turning on his heel and heading for the door. As he walked away, he could feel Asuka's eyes boring into his back, yet he ignored it. Pulling his headphones over his ears, WA-R-R by Colde took over all of his thoughts, and a sigh of contentment fell from his lips. Life was nice when he was away from home.
Outside, Shotaro let out a shaky breath, the fresh air a welcome relief from the suffocating atmosphere inside the house. He made his way to Karasuno High School, his mind a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions.
The school grounds were bustling with activity as students milled about, chatting and laughing. He adjusted his backpack, feeling embarrassed to be a new and late (to the school year) student.
He kept his head down, avoiding eye contact, and made his way to the main office to get his schedule and class assignment.
After receiving his schedule, Shotaro headed to his first class. The hallways were filled with students moving in every direction, but he managed to navigate his way through the crowd. When he reached his classroom, he paused for a moment outside the door, taking a deep breath to steady himself before entering.
The teacher, Ms. Sato, looked up as Shotaro entered. She smiled warmly and gestured for him to come forward.
"Class, we have a new student joining us today," Ms. Sato announced. "This is Nakumura Shotaro. Please make him feel welcome."
A murmur of greetings and curious whispers filled the air as Shotaro made his way to an empty seat near the back. He kept his gaze lowered, avoiding direct eye contact with his classmates. The room felt stiflingly warm, and Shotaro could feel beads of sweat forming on his forehead despite the air conditioning.
