She stared for a second too long. So did he.Whenever he stared like this, she often wondered if he noticed her like she did him. Baby hairs had started to grow at the ends of his chin, gently unfolding to meet the growing patch of hair lining his temple. He was becoming a man and she was becoming more aware of this.
This was no longer the boy she grew up with. No, he had been abducted and replaced by an alien, a really attractive incredibly sexy similar looking alien. "Hey Matt?" She couldn't even look him in the eye. "Yes Beth?" He raised his head from the sea of calculus books he was reading... He was so smart!
She looked down at her book where her homework lay undone and pretended to write. She hated calculus. Not just the fact that she knew that knowing how to differentiate x and the other under appreciated alphabets would not help her become a world renowned designer, but also because it was pointlessly hard. Just when she thought she was getting it,BOOM! The teacher slaps her with another brain wracking question. No, thank you!
"You really are annoying you know?" He sighed and shook his head before stretching out his long body, a strip of brown skin could be seen at the bottom of his raised shirt.
"What did I do?" She opened her eyes in mock surprise and laughed. She could never keep up a pretense for long before dissolving in a fit of revealing laughter. "You're such a terrible actor" he rolled his eyes and rubbed it. "Ugh, this question is so hard. Have you done number 8 yet or have u even started?"
"Funny" she said flatly, "just so you know, I've actually written something down." It was in part, true. She had written the date on the top right corner of the page and proceeded to doodle shapes that looked like an elephant in labour.
"Sure you have" he laughed.

With him, she could be truly herself. With him she would find true acceptance, something she had longed for but her ego would not allow her mention.
The way her heart beat faster when she saw him, and a smile inched across her face when he looked at her. She screamed his name on sighting him, half preparing herself for the disappointment of getting a response that did not level with the amount of enthusiasm as hers.
Her heart smiled as he ran towards her and embraced her, their limbs entangling, trying to get as close as possible. Love flowed through his arms. As always, she found it easy to get lost in his enveloping love. Too easy.
She withdrew quickly as usual as the familiar sensation of attraction began to spread across her. With a shield of mock anger on her face, she distanced herself from him, forcing her feelings back inside, under the hiding place of her heart.
The last time they had seen she left in a hurried exit fueled by heart ache. She was going to leave soon and as usual, was trying to spend as much time with him as possible. She expressed her love to him which was met with indifference. He was trying hard not to show he cared because he was a "man" and men don't cry.
This , she felt, was not the best time for such cold responses, not now that she was leaving and wouldn't see him for a long time.
God! She loved him so much it hurt. She sulked over the irony of having him without having him. Maybe she was really as selfish as he oh-so constantly said. If she was spoilt and used to getting what she wanted handed to her, why did she feel like she was being denied everything she really wanted?
She cried tears of longing, bitter tears that left a salty taste of uncertainty with each fresh cascade.
Comforted by the illusion of the shared heartache of love songs, she fell into a dream filled sleep, one where she had what and who she wanted. In her dreams, just like with him, she could be happy....
Ed Sheeran was her favorite, he seemed to know the exact words to describe the feelings which she could only describe with tears. Hey Ed, do you get lonely too?

Okay, he thought she was a flirt, unable to control her emotions. She didn't know how to explain to him how all those other guys were just a way to pass time. Yeah it sounded bad, but he liked other girls too and she had to bare the slow agony of watching him laugh at another girl, cringing a little inside when his face lit up at the mention of another girl's name. How she wished he felt the same about her.
Little did she know, this would dominate her thoughts for a long time to come. The haze of uncertain possibilities that hung over them like
a thick fog. She loved him, he loved her. What was missing?
