George Blackwood was perfectly content with his circumstances. As an eligible, wealthy man, he had the freedom any first born son could imagine. He enjoyed nothing more than raking his way across the world, only to return with stories and a financial endowment that made his trousers sag. His latest ventures in the East Indies had proved fruitful, but as he returned from his 2-year long journey, he found his idyllic existence in society had come to an end. Shortly after his departure from England, his father had fallen ill, and mere months later had succumb to his illness. The newly titled George Blackwood, Earl of Halifax, avoided his responsibilities and predestined life by ignoring letter after letter he had received from his mother, siblings, and various friends while on his journey. Once his business had concluded, Lord Halifax knew there was no sense in delaying the inevitable any longer, and he sailed back home.

Upon his arrival, he was greeted with the familiar sights and smells of London, a town he had called home his entire life. Lord Halifax quite enjoyed his life here, before he was to be weighed down by societal expectations, and despite his apprehension, he felt a sense of excitement during his carriage ride away from the port. He had terribly missed his mother and siblings, and in grieving his father from afar, his longing for his family had only grown stronger, another reason he had been greatly persuaded to return home. Stepping out of the carriage and climbing the front steps of his family's London home, Lord Halifax dismissed the growing ache in his heart and reached from the door handle.
