Five Hargreeves couldn't shake that girl out of his mind

Five Hargreeves couldn't shake that girl out of his mind.

Maybe it was her accent that had him thinking about her. Maybe it was that sweet smile of hers. Or maybe it was the fact that she looked at him like he was a normal person. But whatever it was, she had infected his mind like a disease.

He kept replaying the small conversation they had, and he cursed himself for being so short and weird with her. A pretty girl was talking to him, and that was how he responded. What was wrong with him?

Five rubbed his face, and grabbed his blazer. Maybe taking a walk would get his mind off the girl. He didn't even know the girls name! So why was he sitting here like a love sick puppy, and thinking about her constantly? This was not like him at all.

"Come on, Five, pull yourself together." He whispered to himself.

As he turned the corner, he saw the swinging sign of a diner, and decided to get himself a drink. Maybe coffee would take his mind off things.

Though, that was proved wrong when he walked inside, and saw the pretty blonde girl from yesterday standing behind the counter. She smiled at him, and Five almost melted in his spot.

"Hey, stranger." She smiled.

"Hi." Five greeted, a smile of his own spreading across his face.

Five looked down at her name tag, which read 'MILLIE' in big bold letters. At least he knew her name now. That made him thinking about her less weird. Well, that's what he told himself.

"So, what can I get ya, darlin'?" She asked.

Five felt like his brain stopped working. He stared at the girl, his mouth slightly open as he tried to form words. But all he could do was stare at the girl as his cheeks became red. He was glad that none of his siblings were around, because he would never hear the end of how a girl made him speechless just by using the word darlin'.

It took him a moment to realize that he probably looked like a creep, so he blinked rapidly, trying to get out of his daze. "Uh, coffee. Black. Uh, please."

The girl smiled at him, and turned to start on the coffee. Five watched her, his eyes holding a soft look that would have had his siblings reeling with shock. She moved gracefully, and her long blonde hair was tied back in a complicated looking braid. She reminded Five of Grace in a way. With how happy she looked to be helping others, how she hummed quietly to herself, and how she always had a smile on her face.

"Is there anything else I can get ya?"

Five looked up at her from his spot at the bar, before slowly nodding. "What kind of muffins do you have?"

Millie gave him a smile. "We have blueberry, chocolate, banana nut, chocolate chip, and oat. Take any pick ya like."

"What's your favorite?" Five asked.

"The blueberry are pretty good." She told him. "My brother Alex makes 'em fresh every mornin'."

"I'll take one of those then."

As soon as she walked away, Five's smile dropped, and he rubbed his face harshly. What the hell was the matter with him? Since when was he nice to people? Even if she was pretty, he was never this nice to strangers. He was barely even nice to his siblings!

She walked back out, the muffin and coffee on a small tray, and set it in front of him. He gave her a smile, and a gentle thank you, before taking a sip of his coffee. Not too bad.

The bell on the door chimed, and Millie and Five turned to look, seeing a tall man with brown hair walk in, two kids following behind him. Millie went stiff, and she gripped the counter tightly. Five watched the man cautiously, before turning to Millie, who turned pale.

She wasn't a scared stiff. It was more of an angry stiff. Almost like she knew the man. Before Five could say anything, Millie's face went slack, and then a smile appeared again. She smiled at Five smile, her grip loosening on the counter.

"You said that you were from New York, right?" She asked, leaning against the counter.

Five nodded, taking a sip of his coffee. Millie's eyes lit up a bit. "Is it nice there? I've never traveled anywhere before."

"It's okay. Definitely a lot different then here." Five answered. "Do you want to travel?"

Millie shrugged. "Never thought about it. I've got my siblings here, and that's all that I really need. What about you? You said that your siblin's were here too?"

Five nodded, growing a bit quiet. They were here. He just didn't know where any of them were. He had been looking for them, actually. But then Millie took over his mind, so he stopped for a drink, but she was there, and now he was here, unable to bring himself to stop talking to her.

Five could talk to her for hours—days even. He wished that she would just keep talking, so he could listen to her accent. It was like a sweet melody that played that he wanted only his ears to hear.

"So, ya gotta name?"

"What?" Five once again snapped out of his daze, staring at Millie.

The girl gave him an amused smile. "A name, darlin'. You gotta name?"

"Five," he answered. "Hargreeves. Five Hargreeves."

Millie's smile froze on her face for a split second, and if Five wasn't a trained assassin, and trained to read emotions, he would have missed. "In'erestin' last name. Peculiar first name too."

"My father was a peculiar man." Five shrugged.

Millie laughed a bit. "It's a lot better then my name."

"Millie's a pretty name." Five said.

"My real name's Melissa." She told him. "But I hate it, so I go by Millie. But that ain't half as bad as my sister's name. She's Josette—goes by Josie. I think our parents hated us."

Five smiled at her. Her eyes flickered to the man and children sitting in the booth, and Five nearly missed the look that flashed in her eyes. She stared at them for a few more minutes, before she slowly turned away from them.

"Is there anything more I can get ya? More coffee?"

Five shook his head. "No, I'm-I'm good now, thank you."

Millie smiled at him, and stood up, walking to the back. When she got back there, she punched the wall, her smile falling as she seethed. That man had some nerve showing up at their family diner after what he did. If there weren't other people out there, Millie would take care of him right then and there. But alas, she knew that Josie would get mad at her if she didn't wait for her and Alex.

After a few more minutes of silent anger, Millie let her face fall slack, before she softened, and her smile came back. For now, Millie needed to keep to herself before she accidentally snapped and something bad happened. She'd get her fun Friday.
