The dark sky hovered above our village, covering it with black, only dim light posts being able to lit up ones path. I struggled to stay awake during my conversation with my father. It seemed something was pressuring me to go to sleep, even though I couldn't just yet. I wasn't even in my room yet!
My father then looked at me and asked, "So, Hiccup. How do you feel about this whole 'Night Fury' thing?" I broke out of my droopy thoughts, and snapped back into reality. I looked at him with a lost glance, shaking my head slightly before staring right back at him. I hesitated to tell him, even my mouth feeling too dry to speak. "It's weird." I flatly replied. His desperate face then turned to one of confusion, tilting his head slightly to the right. "Is that all?" He asked me, earning a nod from me. He sighed, disappointed at my reply, but right now I felt too tired to even speak. Stoick then stood up, and walked over to me. He patted my right shoulder a few times, before walking into the kitchen and closing the door, clearly going in to prepare dinner. "I feel so... weird. Did I do the right thing?" My thoughts once again came back to me, causing me to fall into the void and into a pit of pure memories- which felt somewhat soothing. My eyelids started to droop again, my body also losing balance as it leaned forward. My hair started to dangle in front of my forehead, as I continued to lean forward, and down the chair I was seated in.
SMASH! I broke out of my trance as soon as I heard the ferocious sound. "Sorry!" I heard my father yell from inside the kitchen. I supposed a plate had slipped through his hand and had fallen to its doom, making a disturbing sound when it made impact. I looked at the kitchen door, my vision fading as I did so.
What..? What happened? Did all that thinking make me go numb? Because I could no longer feel my body.
"Hiccup!"
...
I woke up in my bed, a very strange feeling lingering inside my mind. My head was throbbing in pain, my back aching to add up to my list of worries. I groaned, sleepily lifting my back up from my cozy bed, my head hurting even more than it already did. Did I just involuntarily fall asleep in the living room..? It didn't seem like a long time had passed, since I could still hear my father making dinner downstairs.
"Urgh... what is.." I groaned again as I looked behind me. I lifted my hand behind my back, only to feel a rough texture in some parts of my skin. They made a clicking sound every time I lifted them, before falling against one another again. They felt like fish scales, only harder. Oh god, am I turning into a merman? Nah. Those are just myths.
I reached out to feel them again, hoping it was just my mind playing tricks on me, but I found out it was very much real soon enough. I gritted my teeth, sucking in air as I continued to feel the strange texture. I quickly removed my hand from the spot, grabbing my wrist tightly with my other hand. "What even is that?" I asked myself, trying to keep it down in order to not disturb the 'chef' downstairs. I supposed I had grown ill, and it was just part of the symptoms it contained. I released a sigh of relief, reassuring myself it was nothing to worry about. That is... until I looked at my hand. Black scales covered the top of it, before turning it around to find cat-like paw prints on my palm and fingers. I shrieked, finally earning my father's attention. I quickly slapped my mouth shut with both my hands, feeling the rough texture on my strange paw prints. I slowly removed them from my mouth, taking another look at both my palms and fingers.
I laid back down on my bed, resting my head on my pillow, wishing this was all just a nightmare. I closed my eyes, letting myself relax and clear my disturbing thoughts. I was also relieved, since I didn't hear my father's footsteps approaching my door. I suppose he thought he was just hearing things- as always.
