Ruby and Sapphire didn't unfuse very often, but when they did they were sure to make it special. Every once in a while, they would take a day to separate and partake in the human custom of 'going on dates' and spending time together.
This particular day had been a 'date night,' and it was coming to a close. As the sun started to set, the red and blue gems made their way back into the temple. With huge smiles and plenty of excited giggling, they made their way to the door to their rooms. Ruby holding out her left, and Sapphire her right hand, the two activated the door and walked into their room.
"It was wonderful spending the time with you today, Sapphire," Ruby whispered in the ear of the blue gem standing right beside her. Ruby looked down at Sapphire's hand and slowly reached out toward it, and gently took her hand into hers, intertwining their fingers.
"I did too, Ruby," Sapphire hummed, a smile forming on her lips as she met her precious red gem's gaze. "You have such mesmerizing eyes..."
"As do you. You should keep your hair out of the way more often." Ruby said in a soft tone, and then proceeding to lean forward and plant a delicate kiss on Sapphire's forehead. "Hey, we've had a long day. I know gems don't need sleep, but...." Her voice trailed off as she shifted her gaze away from those radiant blue eyes down at the ground.
Sapphire pulled her tight into a hug. "We could use the rest. I know I'm exhausted, and no doubt you are too. We are so used to being fused. This is definitely different. There isn't anything wrong with being worn out, my little fighter." With that being said, she gently kissed her love on the cheek, and grabbed her hand and pulled her towards their bed. The two of them plopped down and into the warm and soft embrace of the blankets. "Get some rest, love. You can sleep. It's okay, I promise," The blue gem whispered, giving Ruby one last kiss on the cheek and scooting closer to her and holding her close.
"Goodnight," Ruby mumbled as she got as close to Sapphire as possible, and once she knew it was safe to, she drifted off into a deep sleep. Sapphire wasn't one to partake in human customs often, so it wasn't as easy for her to fall into slumber as it was for her partner. After a long while of watching the red gem sleep, and smiling at how cute she looked, Sapphire was eventually able to slip into sleep.
.....
"AHHHHHH!"
Ruby let out a piercing scream as she abruptly jolted awake. She panted as she sat up in bed, eyes wide with terror.
Sapphire awoke, completely startled. "Wha..?" She mumbled, immediately looking to her right to see that it was Ruby who had made the noise. "Ruby? Ruby! What's wrong?" She frantically questioned, eyes searching around the room to try and see what could've happened. Not finding anything, her eyes locked on Ruby's, and realized that she wasn't moving other than heavy breathing. "Ruby! You have to tell me what's going on!"
The red gem couldn't move. She was frozen in complete and utter panic.
Sapphire, understanding that her yelling wasn't getting through to Ruby, decided to try something else. She took a deep breath, and then began to sing. She sang the same familiar tune she always did. It was the song she always used to calm Ruby. If this song didn't work, Sapphire wasn't really sure what would.
Ruby's breathing slowly started to approach normal as she started to hear her lover's angelic voice. After a few minutes that seemed to last an eternity, the red gem was finally able to move. Without warning, she latched herself onto Sapphire, holding her in a tight embrace. Sapphire continued the song softly into Ruby's ear until she loosened her grip. "Ruby?" Sapphire said in a hushed tone. "Everything is okay darling, I promise. You know I wouldn't lie to you. Tell me what is going on. I might have future vision, but I can't read your mind."
Ruby slowly and carefully drew in several deep breaths before attempting to speak. "I-I....I'm o-okay....." She whispered, almost inaudible. "J-just.....just a r-really bad d-dream...."
A kiss was softly pressed into Ruby's forehead. "Will it help you to tell me about it?"
"....maybe."
"You can trust me with anything. You should know that by now."
"I-I know, Saph. I know I can t-trust you." The fighter refused to let go of her striking singer. "I just d-don't k-know if I can t-tell it or..."
Sapphire completely understood. She that Ruby was just afraid of being paralyzed by fear as she was moments earlier, and that talking about it might bring that back upon her. She didn't want her marvelous red gem to suffer any more. She wouldn't force her to say anything. "It's okay, Ruby. You don't have to say. I understand." She leaned in and kissed her on the forehead. She slowly ran her fingers through Ruby's thick hair, and started to hum her song again.
Ruby nuzzled in close to her lover, and let Sapphire sing her a lullaby until she was able to drift back to sleep, knowing that no matter what happened in her dreams, she would always awaken to see she was still safe in Sapphire's arms.
