The adrenaline rush from the confrontation at the docks lingered in Alyssa's veins for days. Each member of the crew was buzzing with their own reactions and preparations for the next steps, but Dominic decided it was time for Alyssa to learn more about the core of their world: cars.
One morning, Alyssa woke to the sound of revving engines and the smell of freshly brewed coffee. As she walked into the garage, she saw Dominic and Brian huddled over the hood of a sleek black Dodge Charger, their faces deep in concentration.
"Morning, sleepyhead," Mia greeted her with a warm smile, handing her a cup of hot chocolate. "Dom has something special planned for you today."
Alyssa's curiosity piqued. She sipped her hot chocolate and approached Dominic and Brian, who turned to her with grins on their faces.
"Ready for your first driving lesson?" Dominic asked.
Alyssa's eyes widened in surprise and excitement. "You mean, I'm going to drive?"
Brian chuckled. "Yep. But first, you've got to learn the basics. Come on, let's get started."
They led her to a classic Mustang that had been modified for easier handling. It was smaller and less intimidating than the muscle cars Dominic usually drove, but it still had an aura of power.
"Hop in," Dominic said, opening the driver's side door.
Alyssa climbed into the driver's seat, her heart racing with anticipation. Dominic sat in the passenger seat while Brian and Mia watched from nearby.
"First things first," Dominic began, "you need to get comfortable with the controls. This isn't just about speed; it's about understanding the car."
They spent the morning going over the basics: the gear shift, the clutch, the brake, and the accelerator. Dominic explained each component patiently, and Alyssa soaked in the information, eager to learn.
After an hour of instruction, Dominic nodded. "Alright, let's take it slow and see what you've got."
Alyssa gripped the steering wheel, her knuckles white with tension. She took a deep breath and started the engine. The Mustang roared to life, vibrating with potential energy.
"Easy does it," Dominic coached. "Just ease into it."
Alyssa carefully shifted into first gear and gently pressed the accelerator. The car moved forward, and she felt a thrill of exhilaration. Under Dominic's watchful eye, she navigated the empty parking lot, practicing turns, stops, and starts.
"You're doing great," Dominic said, his voice filled with pride. "Now let's try something a bit more challenging."
They headed to a makeshift course set up with cones. Alyssa took on the challenge with determination, maneuvering around the cones and practicing sharp turns. Her confidence grew with each successful pass.
In the afternoon, the rest of the crew gathered to watch. Letty, Roman, Tej, Han, and Ramsey cheered her on, offering tips and encouragement. Even though it was her first time behind the wheel, Alyssa felt the camaraderie and support of her new family.
"Alright, let's see how you handle a bit more speed," Dominic said, his eyes gleaming with excitement.
Alyssa nodded, shifting into a higher gear and pressing the accelerator. The Mustang responded eagerly, surging forward. The world outside the windows blurred as she picked up speed, the wind whipping through her hair.
Dominic guided her through more advanced maneuvers, teaching her how to drift and handle the car at higher speeds. Alyssa felt a sense of freedom and power she had never experienced before.
After several hours of intense practice, they finally called it a day. Alyssa parked the Mustang and climbed out, her face flushed with excitement.
"You did amazing," Brian said, clapping her on the shoulder. "You've got a natural talent."
"Thanks, Brian," Alyssa replied, beaming. "I couldn't have done it without all of you."
As the crew dispersed for the evening, Alyssa found herself alone with Dominic. He looked at her with a mix of pride and affection.
"You've come a long way in a short time," Dominic said. "But remember, this is just the beginning. There's a lot more to learn, and the road ahead won't be easy."
"I know, Dad," Alyssa replied, her voice filled with determination. "But I'm ready. I want to help, and I want to be a part of this family."
Dominic pulled her into a hug, his embrace strong and reassuring. "And you are, Alyssa. You are."
As the sun set over the garage, Alyssa felt a renewed sense of purpose. She had taken her first steps into a world of speed and danger, and she was ready to face whatever challenges came next, fast and furious.
