Chapter 3

Cousins

The odd women continued to wrap her long arms around my body. I felt stiff and awkward, but the hug felt warm and comforting. I wanted to hug her back, but my luggage pulled my arms toward the ground and I didn't want to let go of them to land onto the dirty and muddy road.

While I was almost being squeezed to death, Chloe stood next to the taxi and stared at me until the women let go of me. I looked up at her eyes which were a smooth hazel-brown. She looked down at me as her soft hands gripped my arms.

"I am so happy to see you. It's been too long." There was a pause and then I asked with shyness:

"Are you my aunt?" It's was a bit of a stupid question and it made me look like an idiot.

"Well... sort of, but you can call me your aunt." The woman, who was apparently my "aunt", had a wild personality. She had a slight accent of some sort and seemed extremely enthusiastic. I then smiled. I too was happy to see my relative.

"Aw! Chloe!" My aunt then turned to my sister and widened her arms out. She wanted a hug from Chloe too. While the two met, I looked towards the font door of the cabin. It was still ajar and quite big, too. So was the cabin. It looked cozy and welcoming.

"You two girls go right in; I have so much to talk about with your mother." My aunt said. At that moment, I tried to remember my aunt's name. I thought about it as I walked toward the door with my heavy luggage. Even thought it had wheels, it wouldn't really go anywhere across the rocky road other than the laundry machine.

The front door had one small stair step in front of it which I stepped over and reached inside of the house. The bag dragged on behind me. I pulled it in and set it down onto the clean wooden floor and then looked up to examine the room. It was spacious and had a large fire place in the wall. There were three couches which all looked extremely soft. There was also a glass coffee table with wooden legs place next to two of the sofas: each a different size. The white carpet that covered the entire room looked fuzzy, which tempted me to take off my shoes to find out if it, really was. I left my bags next to the door and began to “skate” across the carpet with my pink fuzzy socks on. The ground was squishy. Both my socks and carpet, as they rubbed against each other, began to produce electricity. I wanted to find out how much. When Chloe stepped inside and placed her luggage next to mine, I touched her with my electrified finger, and just as I hoped, I zapped her.

“Ow! What was that for?” Chloe screeched as a sinister smirk grew on my face. In my mind I was doing an “evil laugh”, even though my action was barely even criminal-like.

“I just had to do it.”

“Oh really?” Chloe then slipped her shoes off to bare her long green and white socks she got for Christmas once. Her left eyebrow raised. I then knew what was coming.

Immediately, I began drag my feet around the spacious room and tried to “charge” myself up. Chloe did the same. I tried to move faster than my sister did, but she was fast. Wee went in figure eights and zigzags. Every time we passed each other, we’d poke the other on the arm, hoping that it would zap them. We both found this pretty hilarious. We continued to zap each other over and over as we skate across the room until our aunt and mother came into the cabin.

“What are you girls doing?” Mom asked. We both stopped in our tracks. I was then standing next to the fire place while Chloe was placed by the front door, which was where she poked mom on the arm to zap arm. I giggled as I heard the shock and Chloe grinned. Mom rubbed her arm and gave Chloe a “what were you thinking?” look, but then she smiled.

“So this was what you were doing?” Mother asked.

“Yep.” Chloe said. Mom then looked at my aunt, who shrugged and said,

“That’s on way to have fun.” We all smiled and then my aunt, who I eventually learned that her name was Catherine, guided us all to the room we were sleeping in.

“Where is everyone else?” Chloe asked.

“They all went shopping for things for the week. They should be back soon.” I was really excited to meet my cousins, even though I’m not a social being. Chloe, on the other hand, often acts like she already knew the person for years. Sometimes I wish I could be like that.

“You two girls will sleep in here.” Catherine gestured toward the extremely large room after she opened the polished wood door.
