Unfortunately for him, Danny was the first out of the two to wake up. Even more unfortunate, he woke up with a terrible cold.
Danny slowly sat up, groggy with a running nose. He coughed, Jeremy falling off of the couch and onto the hardwood floor. In that moment Danny was snapped back into reality. All of him and Sam's interactions from the previous night coming back to him. He sat there, his heart racing as he completely freaked out. Rejection wasn't a foreign concept to him, and right now he was terrified he'd lose his only friend.
Even more so he was worried Sam would get physical with him. While Danny did not think that Sam was a bad person, he also knew that he couldn't trust anyone. Especially not a boy he'd only known for a handful of days. Danny slowly got up, realizing he was also in his onesie. He cursed to himself under his breath and quickly stripped it off in embarrassment, searching for his clothes.
Danny finally found the laundry room, sniffling and coughing as he put his clothes from the night before back on. He grabbed his backpack, starting to pack all of his things. He knew he had no where to go, but he wasn't sure he would live with the mortifying thought of Sam knowing his secret.
As Danny stood and put his backpack over his shoulder, ready to leave, Sam emerged from his room. All the sniffling and coughing must've woken him up. Sam scanned Danny, noticing the change in outfit and his packed bag, "What are you doing..?" He asked.
Danny felt like a deer in headlights. He gripped the strap to his bag "I'm going home.." he said in a hesitant tone, like he was worried he'd say the wrong thing. Sam looked at the state Danny was in. He was beaten and bruised for reasons Sam still didn't know, his face was flushed, his nose running, his clothes tattered, bags under his eyes. Sam shook his head "your not going home Danny, look at you" he motioned to Danny's current state "I'm not staying here" the boy replied, constantly hoping in his head Sam had forgotten about the night before. Sam sighed "Is this because of last night?" He asked. Danny clenched his jaw fuck he thought, "I don't know what you're talking about... I just want to go home" Danny mumbled. Sam crossed his arms "you're an age regressor" he said simply, glad he'd done his research. Danny's head snapped up, looking at Sam shocked he knew what that was "how do you know what that is?" Danny said fearfully. Sam sighed and walked to the kitchen, starting to take a few things out for Danny "you're not as weird as you think." He said "it was also incredibly obvious..." he gently took Danny's backpack and set it to the side which Danny allowed.
Sam led the boy back to the couch, handing him a class of water and some Advil "you don't need to worry about that, we can talk about it later" he said "right now I'm more concerned about the state your in" he reached his hand out, feeling Danny's forehead. Danny took the Advil handed to him and chugged all of the water "shit your burning up Danny.." he mumbled "lay back down" he said, waving Danny to lay which he did. "I'm sorry" Danny said quietly as Sam put a blanket over him and a cold washcloth over his forehead, it was the first thing he'd said in a while. Sam looked down at the boy "Sorry? What could you possibly be sorry for?" He asked "You haven't done anything wrong Danny" he said simply, in a gentle reassuring tone.
Danny bit his lip, a painful lump forming in his throat that he tried to swallow. It didn't work, soon his eyes were welled with tears that began to drip down his cheeks. For years he'd never known safety, or acceptance. He was always running from something, sometimes it was himself. In this moment, he felt safer than he'd ever felt before. He couldn't help but burst with emotions. He sniffled and slowly started to sob.
Sam was shocked, at first not knowing what to do. He hesitantly reached a hand out and took Danny's in his "it's okay Danny.." he whispered "it's okay"
Danny squeezed his hand, crying to himself for a while before slowly calming down and falling back asleep. Sam sat with Danny as he cried, and until he fell asleep, rubbing his thumb over the boys hand which he still held. When Danny fell asleep, Sam slowly released his hand, getting up and coming back with a few things. He first gently dried Danny's tears, making sure he didn't wake him. Then he took a look at the boys wounds. He put some antibiotic ointment on the cuts as softly as he could and put bandaids over them. The black eye would have to be iced when he woke up. Sam sighed, wondering who could've done this, and how it happened between the time Danny left Sam's house and the time he appeared on his doorstep.
Sam got up quietly and went to the kitchen, started to cook them both some breakfast. They were technically supposed to be at school right now, but that was the least of Sam's concerns. For now, he focused on making Danny and him omelets. When they were finished, he set them on the table with two glasses of water and went to Danny's side. He gently shook him awake.
The boy grumbled and slowly woke up, looking at Sam "Did I fall asleep..?" He asked quietly, to which Sam nodded "You did" he confirmed. Danny blushed, kind of embarrassed "oh.." he mumbled. Sam smiled "It's alright, I made breakfast while you were out" he helped Danny up and brought him to the table, sitting him down "Thank you Sam" he said softly, beginning to eat. He didn't verbalize what was happening in his mind, but he could've cried again at the taste of the omelet. He hadn't had a real meal in what felt like years. It was delicious. Danny tried not to eat too messy or fast, being as respectful as he could be. He hadn't said very much to Sam.
Sam noticed Danny's silence, but he wasn't having it. Sam let Danny eat a bit before breaking the silence,
"Danny, who did this to you?"
