10 YEARS AGO I WAS 19, IN A BAND AND ENJOYING LIFE.
Three guys and one girl in a band together. We thought we were the shit- because we were. It's like fake it til you make it, and we were the perfect example of that. Yet here I am, at a gas station ringing people up.
"That'll be $9.65." I say in a bored tone.
"Thats fucking impossible, all I got was a bag of chips and damn soda."
"Sir, you bought a 2 liter soda and a party size bag of chips." I argued back
"Well listen here bitch, give me it for $5 and we'll both be happy."
"Im sorry I can't do that."
He then grabbed the bag of chips opened them and threw the bag at me. Fortunately god decided to shine down on me and the bag had just missed me.
"Fuck you and fuck them damn chips, eat them off the floor you damn dog." He spat before walking out and slamming the door causing the glass to crack.
I sighed before deciding to move his previous items beneath the counter.
My next customer came up, golden hair, sharp jawline, high cheekbones, sharp nose... and a scent all too familiar. Think Chloe... Where is this man from? Ah fuck, Ill just ask. Thankfully he looks like he knows me too.
"Some people are just so damn rude." He says
"Yeah.." I ring up the six pack of beer "Hey I dont wanna sound like stupid or anything but, I think I know you."
His face goes from friendly to serious. "No.. it must be somebody else."
"Huh.. okay." I don't believe him. That voice is all too familiar.
"That'll be $5.55. Hey don't you know its an angel numb-"
He slaps a $10 bill on the counter and grabs the pack of beer storming off.
"Hey sir I need an ID! And your change!" I called out just before he left.
He paused before continuing walking. I left my register and reached the doors before calling out to him one last time
"Sir I need an ID!"
He kept walking, though he sped up.
I sighed and walked back to my register before my manager looked at me and laughed.
"Holy fuck Chloe I thought angel numbers meant you'd have goodluck. I mean, on the bright side you did get extra money but he just ran away form you like you were some kind of disease." She teased
"Shut up Christina."
She laughed again before walking away
"Take the $10 home I'll replace it. Oh yeah- and before we close, clean them damn chips up before we get a rat infestation."
I forget we live in new york. I stuffed the bill into my pocket before walking over to the broom closet. Thankfully the store was slow at night and mostly just a bunch of roadtrip people or homeless people come in.
I grabbed the broom and walked back to my register carefully cleaning the mess while I thought to myself.
Who is this man? And why did he get so panicky when I told him I recognized him?
