Port Lavaca is a beautiful place. Beaches stretch across the edge of the water, and piers dot the sandy shores or sit along the rocks. Docks filled with boats are scattered throughout the area, and boats float and bob in the gleaming water. Families with small children meander through the streets, some going to the beach to swim, some to fish, others off to find lunch. Port Lavaca is known for its saltwater fishing. Seafood restaurants are scattered throughout the town. One in particular looked right over the water.
This is where Kate and her new companions sat at a table on the outside deck, waiting for their food, and a plan to come to them. The sun shone brightly in the summer sky. Their table was right next to the wooden railing, looking over the water. Kate could smell the saltwater in the air, and took in a large breath. She'd never seen the ocean before, much less been to the beach. It was beautiful.
"So," Eddie pointed vaguely to a spot on the water in the distance which Kate had pointed out earlier. "We have to get there, and then somehow go down, correct?"
"That is correct," Kate confirmed. She pressed her fingers to her temples. She still had no idea how they were going to manage this. A spaceship at the bottom of the ocean isn't the easiest place to get to.
Vicky shoved a couple of French fries in her mouth and licked her fingers. "So how do we do that?" A seagull landed on the railing a few feet away, which she promptly threw a French fry to.
"Still not sure." Kate thought for a moment, her hands folded on the table, resting her chin on them. "I think the first thing we need to do is get out there. If we can get over it I can scan it, maybe find a point of entry. But we would need to get our hands on a boat."
"Ok. Done." Eddie gestured to the many boats on a dock nearby.
"We're just going to steal one?" Kate scoffed and leaned back. "That's your idea?"
"Well, how else do you expect us to get over there? You said we'd need a boat, there's, like, 20 of them right there. Problem solved."
Kate rubbed her temples and groaned. "Fine. Fine. Ok. So we steal a boat. Can you drive a boat?"
"Why, yes I can," he answered, clearly proud of himself. "We used to go to the lake all the time with our grandpa. He taught both of us how to drive the old boat we had." He stopped. "But how do we get it to start?"
"I can take care of that." She answered.
Vicky sat up straight. "Food's here! Stop talking about stealing boats!"
"Ok, let's see, which boat do we want?" Eddie said loudly after the waiter left. He leaned past Vicky and looked over the docks. "Ooh, that one's red. Let's take that one."
"Oh yeah, or that blue one," Vicky pointed to one with blue stripes.
"No, I don't like the blue one. We'll take the red one. Or the green one." He turned to Kate. "What do you think?"
Vicky looked at Kate and turned her lips down in a comical fake frown, putting her hands together in front of her, pleading. "Please?" She pleaded, trying her best to make puppy eyes.
Kate locked eyes with her and leaned forward across the table. "Green," she answered smugly.
Vicky threw her hands in the air, her faked expression dropping in an instant. "Oh, come on!" Kate smiled and leaned back, taking a bite of fried fish.
"Hey," Eddie said, taking a bite of a fish taco and wiping his hands off on his blue jeans. "She's taking us to space, probably, or something like that. I think she should get to pick the color of the stolen boat."
