Chapter Three: A Second Chance At First Line Part One

It is official, Coach is trying to kill Scott. I mean, why else would he put Jackson on defense when Jackson is pissed at Scott and willing to be extra violent to win? It's basically in Jackson's DNA to be super competitive and need to be the best.

But sadly, I'm sitting helplessly on the bench as Jackson grabs a long stick and takes a defensive position as the rest of the players line up to take a shot at lacrosse practice that day.

"McCall? What are you waiting for?" Coach yells in the midst of barking orders at the team. Scott, realizing he's holding up the line, begins sprinting forward towards the goal with only Jackson between them.

As predicted, Jackson takes this opportunity to slam Scott to the ground and remind the team who was the best player here. Coach Finstock walks towards him and then begins to complain about how slow he was, after already taking snide remarks from Jackson. If I was Scott, I'd be feeling pretty pissed right now.

"McCall's gonna do it again, McCall's going to do it again!" Coach taunts on the megaphone, voicing it to the entire lacrosse team.

They once again line up, and once the whistle is blown, sprint into action once more. After a brief clash, Jackson falls to the ground and the entire team races over to him, unlike they did for Scott. I march over with the first aid kit, figuring I might as well look like I care about Jackass, and notice Stiles and Scott sprinting off the field in a hurry towards the locker room.

I wordlessly pass the first aid kit to Coach and tear myself from the mob, eyes trailing the two boys as they leave the field. I look to the right and see a familiar leather jacketed figure standing next to the bleachers. Derek. I jog over to him, who looks surprised to see me.

"Hey Derek, what are you doing here?" I ask, tucking a strand of hair that had escaped my ponytail behind my ear.

"Just watching the lacrosse practice. What about you?" he asks.

"Oh, I'm team manager." I explain and glance at the field as Jackson stood up, cradling a hurt shoulder.

"Do you know what's happening to Scott, he seems off." I ask, figuring Derek was Scott's friend and probably knew what was going on with him.

"It's a long story." Derek says vaguely. "He probably shouldn't play in the game on Saturday though." he says and I raise my eyebrow in a disbelieving expression and cross my arms over my chest.

"Why not? He's one of our best players." I defend Scott, knowing how hard Scott worked to be first line. And the team especially needed him to play if Jackson's injury proved to be serious.

"It just wouldn't be safe for anyone, including Scott." Derek said and I scoff.

"If you haven't noticed, lacrosse already isn't an especially safe game. And if you're implying Scott is dangerous, I can reassure you he's harmless." I say, refusing to believe anything else. I knew Scott pretty well, and while his recent behavior has been a little weird, I still knew that he would never harm anyone... then again he did hurt Jackson...

"Whatever, I'm just warning you." he says and turns away.

"Well, your warning would be better received if you explained what the hell is going on." I banter back, unwilling to leave this conversation without the last word.

"Trust me Cleo, it's better if you stay out of it." he says.

"Funny thing Derek, trust is earned with honestly and openness. It doesn't just magically appear in five seconds." I say as he walks off. He doesn't say anything, but I assume he heard me.
