I woke up early for a weekend the next morning. I checked my phone and saw it was 8:51am. Nine minutes before I'd get an email from Lance.
I stretched briefly before getting out of bed because I always slept uncomfortably. It made for the worst shoulder and back pain.
I passed by my mirror and was shocked to find some actually decent natural hair. I silently thanked my good karma before walking downstairs to make myself the much needed coffee. I skipped out on making breakfast because I might be hoping to go with Lance and his friends. Maybe just a little bit.
It didn't used to be so quiet on the weekends. After my mom died, that's mainly the one thing that really changed. They used to always make a huge breakfast together on Saturday mornings and I understood why dad didn't want to do that anymore.
He mostly just went for a run on Saturday mornings now and I usually had the house to myself for a few hours. It was a good unwinding from being around people and having loads of work during the week.
At precisely 8:59am, I went back upstairs. I sat waiting with my laptop open to my email until I heard the ding signifying new mail.
Quickly opening and reading the email, I sat there stunned. I didn't make round one? Not to sound cocky or anything, but I didn't see how that was possible.
Still in my pajamas, I got up and was just about to go confront Lance on this decision of his before my email dinged again.
I went back to my open laptop and saw it was another email from Lance.
Just kidding! You made it, ninja. Hope I didn't scare you too much. Round Two info will be emailed out later this evening.
I smiled to myself. What a weirdo he is.
Not surprisingly, when I went to check my phone I found a text message from his number, I'm assuming.
I'll pick you up at 10:15. We're going to Give Me A Break's. I'm paying for you, no arguing. That is, you still want to go?
I quickly responded.
I was literally just about to walk over there IN MY PAJAMAS. You are so paying, no argument needed.
I started to get ready, not expecting a reply. I got one.
Darn. That would've been a sight to see.
I raised my eyebrows. A sight to see?
Are you implying something?
I rolled my eye at his next response.
Just that it would've been a great yearbook picture...
I stopped replying then and started to get ready. It wouldn't take too long since I normally wore a minimal amount of makeup and always wore my hair natural on the weekends.
Admittedly, I was very nervous for this breakfast thing. To new people, I bet I came off as rude and vain even though I'm really quiet and shy. That's why I hate first impressions. Because they're always wrong.
I wasn't going to be shy this time though. I was going to try my best to be bold, friendly, and outgoing. I was tired of worrying about what others thought of me. It was time to just be me.
After getting ready, Lance promptly arrived at 10:15am.
"You suck," I said to him, as soon as I sat down in the passenger seat.
He laughed. "Well, good morning to you too. I'm doing great, how bout you?"
I looked at him. "Oh, c'mon," He continued. "You didn't actually believe that first email, did you?" I raised my eyebrows at him. "Oh my gosh, you did! That'd be the biggest mistake of my high school career."
