Just kidding :D

My head felt emptier and emptier yet heavier and heavier until the muscles in my neck could no longer keep my head steady, and right as I was about to pass out, the death grip on my shoulders disappeared. My legs were shaky and I could barely stand. I opened my eyes just in time to see a fuming Darrell Curtis ripping Paul off of me, before slamming him into the lockers beside me, grabbing a fistful of his hair with one hand and punching him in his face repeatedly with the other.

Cherry rushed over and pulled me back to where she was standing previously. As soon as I was touched, the adrenaline keeping the pain at bay started to fade, and I felt it hit all at once. My knees buckled and I dropped to the floor, writhing in pain.

It felt like someone was taking a sledgehammer to the back of my skull and hitting the same spot repeatedly. Every individual disc of my spinal column felt like it shattered into splinters and was digging into the muscle of my back. Everything ached, everything.

Cherry was scolding me, telling me how stupid that was, but also was asking me if I was alright, all I could say was "I'm sorry" over and over again like a broken record.

Darrell seems to have done a number on Paul, he barely had time to fight back. "STAY DOWN" Darrell commanded, and Paul, looking like he couldn't get up if he wanted to, obliged. By now the crowd dispersed at the fight being over, and Darrel was making his way over to me.

He was panting and nearly out of breath but he picked me up off the floor and dusted off my skirt for me. "Y'alright?" I nodded my head, quickly wiping the tears from my eyes. "What happened?" He asked. "Me and Paul were together since sophomore year, but I turned the corner to see him cheating on me with a cheerleader." He swiped at an unshed tear with his thumb, urging me to continue.

"I did something stupid, I slapped him, I know I probably deserved what happened but I never meant to rope you into-" he cut me off. "Avery, guy's aren't supposed to hit girls. Ever. You did not deserve a one-way beat down for that." I lowered my head a bit, I didn't really believe him.

"He looked like he was bashing your skull in, is your noggin okay?" He asked, reaching his hand to cradle the back of my head. I sucked in a gasp though my teeth at the feeling of a hand in such a sore spot.

"I'm no doctor, sugar, but I don't think your head is supposed to hurt when I touch it that lightly." He said, cupping my cheek. "Prolly not." I said with a noncommittal smile. From behind us, a feminine voice piped up "I can go get a magical bag of ice from the nurse that can fix anything for convenient plot reasons." Cherry offered. I nodded, I forgot she was there. "That would be great, Cher. Thanks."

As she speed-walked away to the nurse's office, me and Darrel were waiting in silence for her to come back. To break the silence I asked "I heard you have siblings." Darrell looked caught off guard, but smiled and said "Yeah. I have three. Sodapop is a freshman, Ponyboy is in seventh grade, and Maxine is in eighth. What about you, any siblings?"

From the smile on his face and the twinkle in his eyes I could tell his siblings were his world, and I found that really cute. "Yeah. I have James in eighth and Vincent in fourth." I smiled, the pounding in my head and the the ache in my back lessened the more we talked.

"James? I knew it, you're the older sister of the blonde freckled kid that Maxine keeps inviting over." I nod. "And you're the older brother of that brunette fluffy haired girl that James keeps inviting over." His smile got wider and wider before he laughed and said "I never knew, they've been friends for a while now, we could have met each other sooner." He said. I stopped and thought about what he said, and I agreed. "Yeah. It's a shame we didn't meet sooner."
