As I walked to school the next morning, my mind was spinning with thought of my moms alleged secret. She usually kept things to herself and I was okay with that. Yet, a gnawing feeling in my stomach wouldn't let me shake the sense that this time it was different. Why?
The cold air did little to clear my head. "Maybe it's nothing."I told myself trying to push my worries away. "She's always been secretive. That's just her being her."
But deep down I knew that I couldn't ignore this. Figure it out Kat.
Figure. It. Out.Suddenly someone his my shoulder and my open bag fell to the ground dumping my books everywhere.
"Hey?!" I yelled at the tall figure who had just sent my books falling.
I couldn't see their because, they were wearing a hoodie with the hood pulled up. Unexpectedly, the person crouched down and began helping me gather my books.
"Sorry."they muttered.
Oh, it's a boy.As he handed me my notebook I got a better look at him. There was something familiar. The hoodie, the scuffed sneakers.
"Joost?" I said my voice dripping with annoyance.
Of ALL PEOPLE, all people in the WORLD , why did it have to be him?!
He looked up.
"Never mind."he grumbled, standing up and walking away.
"Hey?! Aren't you going to help me?!" I shouted after him.
"Gotta get my education, sorry!"he shouted sarcastically, chuckling. He didn't even care about school!!! That motherfu-
Before I could finish , the sky opened up and it started pouring rain. Heavy droplets pounded against the pavement. The once clear sky was now a canvas of dark clouds, and the rain felt like a waterfall.
All my books were soaked.
Furious and frustrated, I hurriedly tossed everything in my bag, not caring about the mess.Once I was done, I ran towards school, covering my face with my hand, to protect my makeup. Each step splashed water up my jeans. The rain was merciless.
Joost's POV (in English)
I was sitting in class, bored out of my mind. The teacher was talking about stuff I didn't even understand.
Suddenly a memory flashed before me - I had left Kat on the sidewalk.I didn't feel guilty. Why would I? She was standing in my way.
All of a sudden the door swung open. The teacher already yelled :"LAAT!", but I noticed it was Kat.
She stood there, completely drenched, water dripping on the floor. She was shivering. There were black streaks around her eyes - mascara or what was it called?
The teacher looked at her, a bit surprised and told her to sit. She didn't even glance at me and sat down in front of me, as usual.
"Karma!" Sophie, I think, was giggling and pointing at Kat.
What was her her problem?!Why did I feel a sudden tightness in my chest?
No. Stop it.Kat's POV
I was so fucking embarrassed. My clothes weren't dried out , so I was walking around with wet clothes , while people were snickering.
And ALL OF THIS was that assholes fault!I needed a place to hide, so I decided that the library would be the best place, since people rarely went there.
In the distance, I saw that Mia was sitting in our secretive spot. I decided to join her, because I knew she wouldn't judge me.
Finally , she saw me and her eyes light up. She motioned with her hand for me to come sit down.As I was coming closer , her face slowly transformed into a confused face.
"Damn, what happened?"she said in a high pitched voice.
I rolled my eyes and groaned:"Ugh, not you too!"
She smiled and I sat down.
"So?"she said
I sighed:"It's a long story."
"Please! I need any kind of new information or drama! My mom took away my phone, because she saw me watching musicalys of Jacob Sartorius! Like what??"
I started laughing.
"Okay, okay! Basically ,some random person accidentally pushed me and my books fell out. He helped me put them back in and then, I understood that it was Joost. He understood ,that I was I and just got up and didn't help me! And then it started raining!"
"How dare he?!"
"I know!"
"Okay, here's what you should do! Firstly start by punchin-"
"Oh, no, no, no! I'm not doing that." I giggled. But that was not on my mind. My mom was. Her suspicious acting had come to my mind once again. Maybe I should ask Mia about that? I mean she gives good advice. Almost all of the time.
"Soo... hear me out. My friend has a problem."
She nodded while chewing chips.
"Her mom and brother have been acting very weird. They've been sneaking around and stuff. One day her mom comes home with puffy eyes and her brother seems sad too! My friend thinks they are hiding something from her. What do you think?"
"Oh, she's definitely having a secret affair!" she said while munching on her food!
I stood up and shouted : "WHAT! NO MY MOM'S NOT HAVING AN AFFAIR!"
"Stiller!" the librarian yelled.
"Damn, girl , so your mom is having an affair! I thought it was your friend!"
"No one's mom is having an affair with no one!!" I said more quietly.
"Well, how do you know?"
I sat down and said : " Fuck, I don't know. I mean there's no other explanation. She even bribed my brother to keep his mouth shut."
"Okay, after school. Is your mom home?"
"Uhh today? No. She's not."
"Okay. Just go through her stuff. Maybe you'll find some evidence!"
"What?! I can't do that." I said with a shocked face.
"Then how will you know the truth?"
I'll do it.
