The full moon cast an ominous glow, illuminating the scenery with an unsettling light. The rain pounded relentlessly, turning the rainforest floor into a quagmire of mud as desperate footsteps sloshed through in a frantic search for escape. Beneath the canopy of the rainforest trees, where beams of moonlight pierced the dense foliage, Lena crouched behind the trunk of a large tree, her breath ragged and her heart racing with adrenaline.
Bullets sliced through the air, narrowly missing Lena's face. She grimaced and pressed herself deeper into cover, silently cursing her fate.
"I should have killed them when I had the chance," Lena thought bitterly, her voice tinged with regret. She knew the men after her were shooting blindly, hoping to frighten her as their target. A bitter scoff escaped her lips, echoing softly in the stillness.
With a wince of pain, Lena assessed her distance from the relentless onslaught. The bullets, distant yet lethal, bore the mark of skilled snipers. Escape seemed futile, an inevitable dance with death.
Lena tightly gripped the smooth, cold jade amulet in her hand, her expression twisted in a sneer. With this artifact, none of the elders nor her step family would ever be able to take full control of the elites within the assassins guild. Not without the amulet, at least.
Betrayal had shattered everything. Lena had endured unspeakable trials to ascend as the next and youngest leader of the assassins' guild. Her prowess in medicine, poisons, disguise, and combat secured her a place as the next head. The elders she once trusted had turned against her, falsely accusing her of her father's death and orchestrating chaos within the guild. They had tried to take the ancestral jade amulet and seize control of the powerful hidden army that belonged solely to the guild's next leader. This elite force was crucial to maintaining the heads dominance.
Lena's birth as a genius and prodigy threatened the opposing faction of elders and their power; and her in-laws greed caused both to team up against her.
Fortunately, while she had escaped she had taken the ancestral amulet with her, the very symbol of power and loyalty of the elite. Lena would never let these traitors have it not even if it killed her.
Her thoughts strayed.
'How long had the elders and her family conspired in order to eliminate father and her?'
A shiver ran through Lena's body as she coughed up black blood. The poison she had inhaled earlier was uncomfortable and slowly dissipating.
Her body had been weakened with an exceedingly rare poison hidden within the incense that burned in her room. Thanks to her sharp senses and swift expertise in poisons, she had barely managed to escape death in time. If she hadn't escaped those traitors, they would have gutted her in her sleep. Luckily she had managed to get a hold of the antidote but it would take a while for her body to remove the black blood from her system.
Casting a desperate glance at the encroaching lights, Lena saw her enemies closing in—roughly fifty shadows converging without remorse or restraint, a force intent on obliterating her.
Summoning her resolve, Lena sprinted up the steep mountainside, every step a painful reminder of her minor injuries.
The pursuit would soon close in from all sides like a tightened noose around her neck.
Finally, she reached the top of the mountain peak and found herself backed against the unforgiving edge of a cliff. She smirked to herself as she looked at the river below.
Lena peered over the cliff's edge, calculating her chances of survival as she surveyed the turbulent river below. Below her was a flooded river surged with debris from the recent downpour. The current was swift, and the drop to the water's surface was at least 300 feet. Lena looked back straight ahead and waited for her enemies to arrive.
Fog began to roll in as the full moon cast its unforgiving light upon Lena's slender form. She was clad in her battle-worn attire, her long, dark hair wet and sticking to her skin from the cold rain.
Despite being covered in blood from her wounds, Lena was strikingly beautiful, ethereal, and graceful, with fair skin and light brown eyes and beautiful curled long dark hair. Her stepsister's envy and her stepmother's hatred for resembling her deceased mother had always been clear. Soon a pair of footsteps approached, and Jezebel emerged into view.
"Surprised to see me here, Lena?...... Now... hand over the amulet you whore!" she taunted.
Lena smirked coldly "..."
Jezebel smiled as she gazed at Lena's pathetic view. Covered in blood and injuries. Jezebel gritted her teeth. No matter what Lena seemed to still look beautiful in it. Enraged, Jezebel lifted a pistol and laughed maniacally.
"We've cornered you like a dog, you bitch. Now, I have the last laugh. Hand it over!
Lena remained still.
"Tch. Still don't know what's good for you, do you? If you hand it over nicely I will let the men play with your body first before they kill you, you slut!"
Lena gave Jezebel a condescending look. "Jealously isn't a good look on you sister."
Jezebel clenched her fists and pointed her gun at Lena.
A deafening bang echoed through the night.
